109th GOLF U.S. OPEN AT FARMINGDALE , NEW YORK
109th GOLF U.S. OPEN AT FARMINGDALE , NEW YORKThey will have the opportunity to push their advantage even further as most of them will start their second round this same afternoon while those who completed the first round in the morning will not play until Saturday which is announced to be suffering heavy rains again. It has been a difficult start on Thursday as play was suspended after three hours due to heavy rains and didn’t resume until friday morning. At 5pm ET the first round is finally in the books and it is no surprise that the players at the top of the leaderboard after 18 holes all iniciated their first round on Friday with very good weather conditions. They will have the opportunity to push their advantage even further as most of them will start their second round this same afternoon while those who completed the first round in the morning will not play until Saturday which is announced to be suffering heavy rains again.

So the luck of the draw could be a huge factor in this 109th US OPEN but there is a lot of golf to be played.

The big surprise resides in the names of the leaders:

Mike Weir(Canada) at 6 under has a 2 shots advantage over the Swede Peter Hanson. Weir was The Masters Champion in 2003 but has only won twice since then and hasn’t shown any solid play lately,at least nothing that could lead to think he would shoot such a great round(64) on this very difficult golf course.

In second place at 4 under, Peter Hanson is pretty much unknown and will probably have a tough time to back up this excellent first round.

David Duval,Todd Hamilton and Ricky Barnes are in third position at 3under par.It is great to see the former world #1 Duval play well after loosing his touch the last few years. Todd Hamilton has had some good results lately and Ricky Barnes is looking to establish himself in the PGA Tour. Those are the five players at the top of the leaderboard of the US OPEN and there is another 8 players under par, among them the fan’s favorite Phil Michelson and the popular runner up from Torrey Pines last year Rocco Mediate.

Tiger Woods is at 4 over,10 shots behind Mike Weir, the same as his playing partner Angel Cabrera.Padraig Harrington, the third of this prestigious group shot 6 over. That shows how tough it has been for those who teed up on Thursday morning.Tiger has never won a tournament when he started with such a poor round.

The second round is under way, they will play as long as light allows it.

Let’s hope the second round will be completed on Saturday so we can see who is going to be a factor for the last two rounds. At the US OPEN 72 holes must be completed to crown a Champion so if the weather doesn’t cooperate there could be a Monday or even Tuesday finish.
