| Alstom Open de France Preview: Odds and the favorite to win it all |
Le Golf National hosts the Alstom Open de France this week and it looks set to produce a thrilling four days with a strong field assembled, including a determined Martin Kaymer. The German needs a top eight finish to move back up to third in the world rankings and he can be confident heading into the European Tour event after beating Lee Westwood in a play-off to win the tournament in 2009. He has a good record in the Open de France and he is relishing the trip back to Le Golf National this week. "I consider it a golf course that I really like, and it suits my eye," he said. Kaymer will not have it all his own way with defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez among those bidding to take the honours on Sunday. The Spaniard became the oldest winner of continental Europe's oldest golf title when he won a play-off 12 months ago and the 46-year-old will be looking to prove he can still take on the youngsters. In total eight of the last ten winners of are in the field - Pablo Larrazabal, Graeme Storm, Jean-François Remesy, Philip Golding, Malcolm Mackenzie and Colin Montgomerie - while Bubba Watson makes the trip from the PGA Tour as part of his build-up to the Open Championship next month. "The reason to come over here was just to experience it, to play a great tour," Watson explained. "I’ve played on the PGA Tour the whole time and just wanted to come over here and experience different life, different golf and a different atmosphere. “I just wanted to be part of this, try it out, and play a great golf course that just got awarded the Ryder Cup." Sweden's Peter Hanson has enjoyed a very consistent first half of 2011 with four top ten finishes, including at the US Open, and his ball striking would appear ideal for Le Golf National, a course that is known for its slick greens and undulating fairways. Peter Lawrie tees off alongside Welshman Stephen Dodd and England’s Richard Bland, while Darren Clarke will be playing with Francesco Molinari and Peter Hanson. Damien McGrane and Shane Lowry will be hopeful of putting their weekend in Munich behind them with a good display in France after both men missed the cut in the second round of last week’s play. Lowry never recovered from a first day score of four-over par and was not able to make amends on Friday as McGrane’s weekend never got going after a flat score of 72 wasn’t enough to save him from the cut. Of the rest, Miguel Angel Jiménez will look for a repeat of last year’s win which saw him become the oldest winner of the competition while The European tour will welcome a new face this weekend when Bubba Watson takes part in his first regular European tour event. Martin Kaymer, who jointly holds the course record at 9 under par will be hoping to regain his standings in the World’s top three. The German dropped a place in the rankings due to his failure to finish in the top eight in Munich, a result that saw Rory McIlroy move up a place. However a top eight finish in France would be enough for him to regain his place in the rankings at the expense of the Northern Irishman. The French open is the oldest event on the tour and with a prize fund €3 million euro is also the richest. This year event is the 95th staging of the tournament and with 94 European tour winner’s on view the 500,000 winner’s cheque looks to be very close to call.
