Golf Tournament Preview: The Vikings Classic Preview
Golf Tournament Preview: The Vikings Classic PreviewThe Vikings Classic may not be the British Open, but it still gives golfers a chance to make a splash on the golf scene.

It also allow for golf betting fans to make some money at online sportsbook Bet Phoenix as they offer wagering odds on this event.

The main focus of the golf world this week is Royal St. George's but the focus in Mississippi is the Viking Classic which begins Thursday at the Annandale Golf Club.

The tournament doesn't mind playing second fiddle, it's been there, done that, having spent time opposite the Masters.

This week's field is heading by three players who have recorded wins this season -- D.A. Points, Johnson Wagner and Keegan Bradley.

There are recent former winners in the field including Will MacKenzie (2008), D.J. Trahan (2006) and Heath Slocum (2005).

There are a lot of young guys with promise and older guys who are past their prime, perhaps prepping for the Champions Tour, guys like Steve Elkington, a former PGA champion and Lee Janzen, a two-time U.S. Open champion.

There are players who have won majors but have struggled with the games. Rich Beem and Shaun Micheel fall into that description.

Low scoring is expected as rain in the region has left the course soft and soft condtions yield birdies.

Here are five players to watch in this event:

Chris Kirk: Made his pro debut here in 2007, but missed the cut. Now in his rookie year, has five top-25s, including his last two starts. Led the field in putting at Aronimink two weeks ago. Ranks 49th on TOUR in greens hit and 52nd in adjusted scoring.

John Senden: Three top-15s here in his last five appearances, including a tie for 11th last year during a blistering Fall Series. Has nine top-25s this season, the most recent a seventh at the Memorial. Ranks 12th on TOUR in greens hit.

Heath Slocum: Won the second of his four PGA TOUR events here in 2005. Has missed the cut just once in nine trips. Followed a tie for 11th at the U.S. Open at Congressional with a tie for 17th the next week at the Travelers. Sits third on TOUR in fairways, sixth in greens.

Bendon En Jonge: Ended his schneid with a share of seventh at the John Deere where he played in the final group on Sunday (and shot 74). Ranks 42nd on the PGA TOUR in adjusted scoring average. Tied for third here last year.

Chez Revae: Coming off a share of fifth at the John Deere, his second top-five of the year (Colonial). Carded a 62 in his second round at TPC Deere Run; ranked tied for sixth in greens hit and fifth in putting for the week. Currently 26th on TOUR in greens hit.

This tournament may not be a major but there is still plenty of reasons to watch and wager on the Vikings classic.
