THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP TURNBERRY Ailsa course, Sunday 19th last day
THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP TURNBERRY Ailsa Course, Sunday 19th, last day

Last day,

Stewart Cink Wins The 138th Open Championship in playoff with 59 years old TomWatson !!

Sunny and cool with gusty winds 15 to 24 mph, perfect day for the ultimate test in golf.

What is 59 years old Tom Watson thinking as he walks on the first tee leading the field of the 138th Open by one shot?

Tom Watson was at 1000 to1 and Mathew Goggin at 500 to 1 to be in the last group this Sunday at the Open. What do the bookies know?

Ross Fisher birdies the 1st to tie the lead and chips in at the 2nd for another one to go to -5, 2 shots clear as Watson bogeys 1 and 3. Fisher bogeys 4 and makes a mess of 5 where he takes a quadruple bogey and goes back to level par, 2 off the lead. Lee Westwood birdies 6 and eagles 7 to take a 2 shots lead at -4 but bogeys 10 and is tied at -3 with Watson who birdied 7. 21 years old from England Chris Wood is briefly tied with the leaders as he is 3 under for the day. Mathew Goggin is back to -3 after birdies at 7 and 10. Stewart Cink birdies 15 to get within 1 of the lead but bogeys 16,he is at -1.

The leaders at -3, Westwood,Goggin and Watson are playing the 14th, hardest hole on the course.Par for Westwood, bogey for Watson and Goggin,Weastwood leads by 1 but bogeys 15 and know is tied at-2 with Watson as Goggin also bogeys 15 and goes to-1. Westwood and Goggin make another bogey at 16 and Tom Watson is solo leader at -2,one shot better than Westwood, Stewart Cink and Chris Wood who bogeyed 18 to post 1 under in the club house with a round of 67.

Westwood birdies 17 to tie at -2 but Watson is solid and does it too to go to -3.

Meanwhile Stewart Cink birdies 18 to post 2 under for the Championship.

Westwood finds the fairway bunker on the left at 18,hits a tremendous 2nd shot on the green and then 3 putts to lose his chances in The Open as Watson is watching form the tee.

Perfect drive for Watson who needs a par to win,a second shot which looks even better lands in the front of the green but rolls through the back.Very unlucky for Tom who fails to get it close with the putter. He has a 10 footer to win The Open. Not his best effort as he leaves it short and the bogey 5 sets up a playoff with Sewart Cink.

The Open Championship was there for the taking for 5 times champion Tom Watson, he will have to go a few more holes if he wants to get his 6th title.

At the Open Championship the playoff consits of a four holes aggregate,5th ,6th,17th and 18th.

Bogey for Watson at the 5th ,par for Cink.

Incredible up and down from Watson at the 6th for par,Cink on the green 2 puts and stays 1 ahead.

The legs must be getting tired as Tom drives in the left rough on 17 and stays in it on his second shot.It looks like the old guy has given everything, nothing left in the tank. Stewart Cink gets on the green in 2 and it seems that it is the end of Watson’s amazing run. A stunned very quiet crowd watches Watson 3 putts for double bogey as Cink birdies the hole and takes a 4 shots lead to the last hole 18th .

Cink on the fairway,Watson in the gallery on the right Great second shot by Stewart to 3 feet and a birdie to end the playoff.

Stewart Cink is the Champion of the 138th Open Championship, his first Major,at the age of 36.Tom Watson at 59 is the runner up.

The 18th hole at the end of the regular round was the defining factor as Cink birdied it to go to -2 and Watson had the worst of luck when his great second shot from the fairway rolled off the back of the green leading to a bogey and a tie at 2 under par.

Cink said about the putt on 18th “It is the most important shot I hit in my life.”

Everybody fought that Tom Watson was destined to win but it wasn’t to be.It was sad to watch the playoff as the great champion ran out of steam, his preparation surely didn’t include a playoff at the end of the week (ah ah) but he gave a great show and a special flavor to this Open Championship as I am sure millions of fans all around the world were routing for him.

Thank you Tom Watson and congratulations to the 2009 Open Champion Stewart Cink.
