The Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur begins main singles draw play with the likes of Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis, American (6) Alex Bogomolov Jr. and Russian (7) Dmitry Tursonov in action on Monday. The Malaysian Field is 28 players deep with the top four Spain's (1) Nicolas Almagro, Serbia's (2) Viktor Troicki and (3) Janko Tipsarevic, and Austria's (4) Jurgen Melzer getting byes through the first round. Today German Florian Mayer won his first career title in Romania so while all those four men have reached that feat a surprise finalist and winner could come out of another pretty open field. In of the better first-round affairs Philipp Petzschner and Mischa Zverev of Germany slug it out on the indoor hard-courts of Malaysia. Go no further than (3) Tipsarevic's section of the draw with (5) Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, one of many talented players in the Serb's portion. While a 3 Vs. 5 matchup in the quarterfinals would be astounding, it'll be hard for both as Davydenko opens up play with American Ryan Harrison before playing either Lukasz Kubot of Poland or Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic in the second round. Janko has the luxury of the bye in the first round, but then faces a stiff second-round challenge with either Italian Flavio Cipolla or Australian Bernard Tomic. No matter who gets through this tough road loaded with potholes, expect that man to be mentally tough enough to get all the way through to the finals. Stamina-wise he may be winded, but inside the ears playing quality player after quality player will reap a large sense of belief. Upsets are a bound in this rournament. While (5) Davydenko falling to Harrison is a good one, it's not my choice as first-round stunner. With only three other singles matches pitting seeded players against unseeded players I'm thinking Baghdatis could have the goods to defeat (6) Bogomolov Jr. Considering the odds in this match and the fact the Cypriot is a former top-20 player a win over an overseeded American isn't the biggest stunner, but it's the safest pick with the Russian much stronger mentally than the unseeded American. There is no safe pick in this event, and if you like to wager on tennis, than the Malaysian Open may be the best place to start. Check out all of the tennis odds on this event at Bet Phoenix.
