The presence of so many stars in the field, including local drawcards Jason Day and Adam Scott as well as British Open champ Darren Clarke, are set to make this year's Australian PGA Championship one of the hottest in recent memory. Organisers have assembled a hot line-up for an event that has become one of the most popular on the Australian calendar largely because of the party atmosphere that comes with playing it at Hyatt Regency Coolum in early to mid-December. But this year the tournament has been brought forward to immediately after last week's Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne, helping to attract a galaxy of marquee names as a result. Aussie legend and International captain Greg Norman joins compatriots Day, Scott, Geoff Ogilvy, Robert Allenby, Aaron Baddeley, Greg Chalmers and John Senden as well as overseas guns Clarke, Rickie Fowler, Bubba Watson, YE Yang and KT Kim in the field. And while he probably won't harbour any grand ambitions about winning the title, Norman would have noted fellow veteran Peter Senior's victory in the event 12 months ago when he beat then-defending champion Ogilvy in a playoff. But having followed playing in the Australian Open by spending most of last week observing and cajoling his men in his role in charge of the losing International team, Norman may be a little rusty early. Scott will start as favourite following a solid showing at Royal Melbourne but the man who was arguably the heartbeat of the International team, Ogilvy, should be respected if his performances at Coolum in the past two years are taken into account. Day returns for his first outing on Queensland soil in several years but will need to have freshened up after an exhausting Presidents Cup campaign in which he also played in all five sessions and looked noticeably tired towards the end. Allenby may not have had a great week at Royal Melbourne, losing all five of his matches, but the three-time winner will be hoping for a change in fortunes and is one of several past champions in the field, along with Norman, Ogilvy, Senior, Nick O'Hern and Craig Parry. Americans Fowler and Watson, the latter fresh from helping the US team to victory in the Presidents Cup, are sure to create some buzz among the galleries while 2009 US PGA champion Yang and Kim, who leapt to prominence at Royal Melbourne, headline the OneAsia contingent. The forecast could also see the weather have an impact again too, 12 months after a torrential downpour on the scheduled final day forced the event into a Monday morning finish. While temperatures are tipped to reach the mid to high 20s all week a thunderstorm that may bring between 20 and 40mm of rain on Wednesday is expected to be followed by a similar deluge on Thursday and further falls on Friday and Saturday before finally clearing up on Sunday. This is a very challenging course and trying to watch the best golfers win the title is difficult, but picking the winner is even harder. However if you can pick the winner it could be worth a few extra bucks in your pocket if you lay a wager at the top rated golf betting sportsbook, Bet Phoenix.
