Mark Calcavecchia sets PGA Tour record with 9 consecutive birdies! Play has been delayed with heavy rain and thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday so it wasn’t until today around 1pm that players completed the second round. More rain has postponned the start of the third and this is where we stand through 36 holes: Jason Dufner leads by 1 at -13 after a great round of 9 under par 63, over Jerry Kelly and Scott Verplank.Nathan Green and Peter Tomasulo are 2 behind at -11 followed by Martin Laird,Pat Perez,Camillo Villegas,Bob Estes,Kevin Na and Retief Goosen who continues the good play he showed at the British Open. This morning,in perfect scoring conditions, Mark Calcavecchia made 9 consecutive birdies from the 12th hole to the 2nd(he started the 2nd round on the 10th hole),a new record on the PGA Tour which was held at 8 in a row for a long time.Bob Goalby set it in 1961 at the St Petersburg Open and since then 5 players equalled it,Fuzzy Zoeller in 1976,Dewey Arnette in 1987,Ed Fryatt in 2000,J.P. Hayes in 2002 and the last one Jerry Kelly in 2003 at The Las Vegas International. “Records are made to be broken” said Cal.” “Can somebody make 10 in a row? Sure... these guys are good and it wouldn’t surprise me that one of them whips out 10 this week end...”.Eric Calcavecchia, mark’s son,who is on his on his father’s bag this week entered the interview room and when asked what his thoughts were, replied “Pretty cool,it’s exciting.” “Man of many words”noted the father. Mark bogeyed 4 and 8 for a 7 under par round and -8 total tied for 17th . Briny Baird also took full advantage of the conditions and equalled Dufner’s round 63,he stands at -9, 4 shots behind .
