On a windy Friday at Baltimore Country Club 60 year-old Tom Watson shot a bogey-free 2 under par 68 on his second round for a -6 aggregate,2 strokes ahead of the field. Watson thrives in these difficult playing conditions,he proved it last July when only 1 shot separated him from being the oldest player to win a PGA major championship at the British Open. The whole world was hanging to his everyshot on the last round when he finished with a bogey at the last hole and went on to lose in a playoff with Stewart Cink. Though he hasn’t finished better than 4th this year on the Champions Tour Watson is playing great this week on a very tough course. At age 60 with an illustrious career behind him he’s not in there for the money or another trophy,he loves to play under pressure against the best. “My motivation is still the competition”said Watson “I like the course here,it’s a big course. You have to hit a lot of quality shots. To hit that quality shot when the chips are down, that’s what I am here for.” Mark Wiebe,Bob Tway,Craig Stadler and Jay Haas are 2 shots behind at -4.Stadler rebounded from a 71 on Thursday with the best second round 65,same as Bernhard Langer who is T 6th at -3 with Loren Roberts and John Cook. With two rounds left there is plenty of golf to come and Watson has had problems closing the deal this season, can he do it in the last major championship of the year?
