Watson pushes his lead to four in Baltimore

On a sunny Saturday at Baltimore Country Club Tom Watson shot the best round of the day 6 under par 64 to take a 4 strokes lead at -12 into Sunday in the last major championship of the year. The 60-year-old Watson carved 6 birdies without a bogey on the anniversary of his successful hip surgery a year ago exactly and is poised to be the oldest major winner on the Champions Tour.He nearly won the British Open back in July but he feels better about his putting now and is also healthier. “I heard a lot of good things about hip replacement, people getting great results and having more flexbility, more range of motion.I can get up on a horse, over a fence, all kind of things now” said Tom “It works so well,I hope it lasts a long time.”

Watson will start on Sunday with a 4 strokes advantage over Loren Roberts (65),John Cook (65) and Mark Wiebe (66) all at -8.Jay Haas who was 2 shots behind in 2nd place is in 5th at -7 after a 67. Loren Roberts won the Senior Player Championship in 2007 when he was paired with Watson and Fred Funk,he will have to go low on the last round if he wants to deny Watson this time around. “Tom will be really hard to catch. He’s got a healthy hip now and obviously is playing very good.”said Loren.

Tom Watson is poised again to make history,if he puts together another quality performance on Sunday he will clinch his 6th major title on the Champions Tour.

PGA TOUR, Turning Stone Resort Championship

After two days of heavy rains the sun was shinning on Saturday and the scores got much better at Atunyote Golf Club.

Scott Piercy with a 6 under par 66 and Matt Kuchar with 67 are leading by 1 stroke over a bunched-up leaderboard.

The 30-year-old Piercy is looking to be the first rookie to win on the PGA Tour this year and Kuchar has been winningless for seven years since he claimed the Honda Classic in 2002. “I feel my game is where it needs to be to win”said Percy who’s showing great confidence after his bogey-free round 66. However there is a lot of players in position to take the title on Sunday.Rod Pampling and Leif Olson are 1 shot behind at -13,Nicholas Thompson 2 behind at -12.Jonathan Bird,Tim Petrovic, second round leaderVaughn Taylor(71) and the talented Swede Fredrik Jacobson are tied for 6th at -11.

There is a 40% chance of rain on Sunday afternoon that could be a factor in the outcome at the Turning Stone Resort Championship but in anycase players will have to look for birdies at every hole to get a shot at a low round and a win in the first tournament of the Fall Series. “It will certainly depend on the weather”said Kuchar “If it’s playing like it did today it’s going to take another 5 or 6-under par to win.”
