| Golf The President's Cup, DAY 3 |
With 2 shots within 10 minutes Tiger Woods turned a sure loss in a win for the U.S. Team. Woods and Striker struggled all Saturday morning in their Foursome against Mike Weir and Tim Clark who had volunteered to face the American mighty duo.The International twosome looked like they were about to close the match on the 17th hole where they stood 1 up and Weir had a 5-foot putt for birdie and Tiger a 25-footer to try to get a half and extend it.Tiger’s putt barely crawled into the cup, sending him in a series of fist pumps, Weir froze over his 5-footer and never touched the hole. The stage was set with all the patrons gathered along the 18th hole watching the last players still on course. After a perfect drive Woods hit a 3 iron within 10 feet of the pin of the par 5.The INT’l in trouble eventually conceded and lost the match after leading the whole round. “It was fun to watch”Stricker said “I had a front-row seat for that.It was pretty cool.” When asked by the on-course commentator “How is it that you do it time and time again in those clutch situations?” a smiling Woods answered “Luck” yeah, right. In the afternoon Four-Balls,however, Tiger was just a spectator of Steve Stricker’s putting clinic who proppelled the U.S. twosome 6 up with 6 holes to play against the Asians Y.E. Yang and Ryo Ishikawa. The match ended 4 and 2 after a good reaction by the INT’ls who won 3 holes in a row before surrendering. Woods and Stricker are the first partners to go 4-0 in any team competition since Larry Nelson and Lanny Wadkins won all their matches in the 1979 Ryder Cup. Phil Mickelson has arguably been the best player on the U.S. Team as he produced 3 ½ points with three different partners and was the artisan of the comeback against Vijay Singh/Tim Clark to half the match with Sean O’Hair as his partner. The Americans are leading the Internationals 12 ½ -9 ½ going into the Sunday singles. No team has ever rallied from a 3 points deficit on the final day to win the Presidents Cup,the International Team will need a small miracle to get the job done. The most exciting matchup in Sunday’s singles is featuring Tiger Woods vs Y.E. Yang.At the PGA Championhip in August Yang, paired with Woods on the last round, rallied from a 2 shots deficit to win by 3 and deny the world #1 his 15th major title while clinching his first and the first major for any Asian player ever. That will draw all the attention and will have the feel of a revenge for Tiger. They both wanted the pairing and they got it. The youngest and the oldest players in the competition will battle it out.INT’l 18-year old Ryo Ishikawa is facing 49-year old USA’s Kenny Perry. All pairings are attractive on the Sunday’s singles,it’ time to pick your favorites and back them with a wager at BetPhoenix.com
