| GOLF Troy Matteson wins Frys.com |
At Grayhawk Golf club in Scottsdale,Arizona,Troy Matteson blew the chance to win the Frys.com Open in regulation when he bogeyed the 17th and 18th on Sunday to end up in a tie at -18 with Rickie Fowler and Jamie Lovemark. He recovered with a birdie on the second playoff hole to take the title and the $900.000 check. “I just can’t believe that it’s ended up like this”said Matteson “I know I stumbled going down the stretch, but I’m still beside myself.” Matteson started the last round with a 3-shot lead after back-to-back 61s on Friday and Saturday,a PGA TOUR record for lowest score in consecutive rounds, but his 2 under par 68 on Sunday wasn’t enough to hold Fowler’s and Lovemark’s 64s who caught up with him on the last round. “That’s as good as I can play”said the 29-year-old Matteson “I really don’t have to worry about playing better than that, because that’s it.” Fowler and Lovemark, who were both seeking PGA TOUR cards, each earned $440.000. The 20-year-old Fowler finished 7th last week in Las Vegas and his total earnings $553.700 give him a Tour temporary membership as he exceeds the 150th spot on the money list. That allows him to skip the first stage of q-school next week and makes him exempt into the final stage, and he still has time to reach the top 125 (he’s 136th ) and earn his card without q-school.Fowler turned pro after the Walker Cup last month. “I knew I was capable of coming out and compiting”said Fowler “But to finish tied for seventh and then tied for first and then losing in a playoff, pretty quick start.” No kidding !!Lovemark, with $453.872 in earnings, can’t get a temporary membership and says he’s off to q-school in North Caroline this week. The Viking Classic at Annandale GC,Madison, is the Fall Series next stop. Check out the pairings and the odds at BetPhoenix.com Sporsbook, there is still plenty of golf to bet on.
