Charles Schwab Cup Championship, Sonoma Golf Club
Charles Schwab Cup Championship, Sonoma Golf Club

The Seniors are competing at Sonoma Golf Club in California in the 30 men-limited last event of the year.

John Cook broke the tournament record to win his second Champions Tour title in three weeks. After shooting 68 on Thursday,a course record 10 under par 62 on Friday followed by a 67 on Saturday gave Cook a 6-stroke lead going into Sunday. His last round 69 (for -22) totalled 266 for the championship,2 shots better than the previous record 268 shared by Jim Thorpe and Andy Bean.

Cook was never challenged on Sunday,Russ Cochran finished second 5 shots behind at -17,Jeff Sluman and Brad Bryant tied 3rd at -15 and last week winner at Oak Hills Phil Blackmar 5th at -14.

Loren Roberts clinches his second Charles Schwab Cup title and $1 million annuity(he also won in 2007). Roberts was the points leader going into the season-ending tournament, but two bad rounds of 70 and 73 to start put him in danger to relinquish that lead to Bernhard Langer who was in the top 10 of the leaderboard after 36 holes.

Roberts came back with a couple of 66s on the weekend to tie Langer at -13 for 6th place and finish in front of the season-long competition.

“I played two totally different golf tournaments in one week”said Roberts “The first two days I really didn’t hit it very good and I really didn’t putt well. You just hate to get to the the end and blow it.” Thanks to two very good last rounds,he didn’t.

The Charles Schwab Cup winner Roberts gets $1 million,Cook jumps from 5th to 2nd place for $500,000,Fred Funk loses one spot and gets $300,000 in 3rd ,Langer in 4th $200,000 and Jay Haas in 5th $100,000.

Cook came in great form at the end of the season, winning the Administaff Small Business Classic two weeks ago, finihed 5th last week at the AT&T Championship and taking the Charles Schwab Cup Championship for a total of more than $1.3 million in three weeks. Not a bad Christmas present.

This ends the Champions Tour Season, the Seniors will be back next year with a few rookies in the mix, including 2009 Presidents Cup’s U.S. Captain Fred Couples.
