| PGA TOUR Geoff Ogilvy wins season opener |
A year after winning by 6 shots,Australia’s Geoff Ogilvy defended his title Sunday at The Plantation Course with a 6 under par last round for a 22 under aggregate, one shot better than Rory Sabattini. Ogilvy, however, was trailing Sabbatini by 2 shots in the middle of his round, but played flawless golf with 5 birdies from the the 8th hole to the 15th to claim the title,$1,120,000 prize money, and take the lead in the Fedex Cup standings earning 500 points. Sabbatini, who started the last round 6 shots behind, made 4 birdies on the front nine followed by a string of five from 10th to 14th ,and 1 more at the 17th to take a 2-shot lead.He ended with a 10 under par 63,missing a 10-foot birdie putt at the par five 18, which ultimately cost him. Ogilvy posted his eigth consecutive round in the 60s at The Plantation Course, and joined fellow Australian Stuart Appelby as the only repeat winners in this winners-only tournament since it moved to Kapalua in 1999. It was the Aussie’s first win since the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match-Play championship last February. The talented Ogilvy is one of my favorite players, and it surprises me that he doesn’t win more often on the PGA Tour.He says that he can learn from last year’s mistakes when he tried too hard and practiced more than usual. His repetitive rhythmic swing and very long driving distance should carry him to many more victories. U.S. Champion Lucas Glover led the first 3 rounds, but he failed on his bid to be the second straight wire-to-wire winner in Maui, going early in the hazard on consecutive holes and dropping three shots. He closed with a 76 and finished 14th in the 28-man field. Matt Kuchar stayed close, though without really threatening the leaders. He missed several opportunities on the middle of the back nine, and shot 67, finishing in third place alone 3 shots behind Ogilvy. The players will tee-up Thursday for the PGA Tour’s second event at Waialae CC in Honolulu,Hawaii, for the first round of the Sony Open.Defending champion Zack Johnson will lead a very strong field, including Steve Stricker,British Open champion Stuart Cink and PGA Championship winnerY.E.Yand among others. The narrow course fits Zach Johnson, who is 10th on Tour in driving accuracy. We could have back-to-back wins by defending champs in Hawaii.
