Ryan Palmer wins Sony Open, his first PGA Tour victory since 2008
Ryan Palmer wins Sony Open, his first PGA Tour victory since 2008 Waialae Country Club Honolulu,Hawaii
The 33-year-old Texan Ryan Palmer started his last round Sunday tie for the lead at -11 with Australian Robert Allenby. They were still tied, at -14, when they teed up at the 5-par 18th hole.

Palmer expected the worst when his chip from 50 feet short of the green came out a little strong.Seconds later,he never felt better. His ball hit the pin, and instead of running 8 feet past the hole, it settled a few inches away.

Palmer tapped in for a birdie and a 4-under 66, giving him a one shot victory in the Sony Open in Hawaii when Allenby missed his 10-foot birdie putt.

“What a way to start the year,” Palmer said, who finished at 15-under 265 and earned $990,000 and 500 Fedex Cup points to tie Geoff Ogilvy at the top of the standings.

On top of that, the win also came with some pretty good perks: Palmer, who finished 150th on the money list last year, is exempt on TOUR through 2012, is going to the Masters for the first time in five years, and can add to his list THE PLAYERS Championship and PGA Championship, with at least one World Golf Championship.

Allenby, who won on the Sunshine Tour and the Australian PGA Championship on the Australasian PGA Tour at the end of last year, was trying to win his third consecutive tournament on three tours, a feat never accomplished before. He gave himself every chance, playing bogey-free on the back nine, but he needed one more birdie at the 18 to force a playoff with Palmer.

His second shot out the rough at the last flew over the green, and he did well to give himself a chance at a birdie. He missed,Palmer was the champion.

Steve Stricker had a 65 and finished third alone two shots back, and Retief Goosen jumped 19 places to finish fourth, closing with a tournament-best 62 that put him on top of the leaderboard when Palmer and Allenby were making the turn, although his 12-under 268 never looked as it would be good enough.

Stricker certainly had his chances, but the putter, which is his favorite weapon, let him down in that last round. He lipped out a 5-foot birdie chance on the 12th and missed from 8 feet on the 14th.

Palmer had a one-shot lead going to the back nine, then didn’t make a par until he missed an 8-foot birdie on the 15th.He birdied the 10th, 12th and 14th,all from inside 12 feet, and bogeyed 11th and 13th from bunkers.

Allenby caught him with a beautiful second shot within 3 feet at the 15th, and the duel was on.

This week, starting Wednesday, the players will battle in THE 50th BOB HOPE CLASSIC at La Quinta, California.
