Shane Bertsch was the last player to register for the five-day, four-course tournament, and, after a difficult journey from Hawaii to the Palm Springs area, arrived late Tuesday afternoon, driving his RV from Phoenix across the desert.

Without preparation, he shot a career-best 10-under 62 on Wednesday, to take the early lead on a course he hadn’t seen in over 10 years. Bertsch had 10 birdies without a bogey even while helping line up putts for his pro-am playing partners under intermittent rain and wind.

“I was just comfortable,” Bertsch said. “I always like these formats, because I help the guys out, and it keeps me maybe not se focused on myself until it’s time to hit, and then I just go and hit it.”

Alex Prugh and Jeff Quinney are 2 shots behind at -8, J.P. Hayes, Garrett Willis, George McNeill and Joe Ogilvie 3 back.

Quinney, Bertsch and Prugh all played Nicklaus Private course, considered one of the easiest on TOUR, but Bertsch hadn’t visited it since qualifying school in the 1990s. Thanks to his travel woes, he didn’t even get a refresher look at it before teeing up.

“It was like a new adventure over every hill,” said Bertsch. “I didn’t know really what to expect. It was one of those courses I just didn’t remember a lot about.”

The weather started deteriorating late Wednesday afternoon, and Thursday’s round was called off because of heavy rains. Officials expect a Monday finish for the 2010 Bob Hope Classic.
