| Phil Mickelson makes 2010 PGA TOUR debut at Torrey Pines |
Phil ended 2009 with two huge wins, the Tour Championship and the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions, his second WGC of the year. That finish was the result of hard work on his putting with Dave Stockton, with putts dropping from everywhere in those two weeks. Mickelson also spent time with Butch Harmon, who has him hitting the ball longer and straighter, and improved notably his course management by thinking better. Phil was always getting in trouble, trying impossible shots to recover that brought catastrophic results on many occasions. A straighter, more composed, deadly-putting Mickelson will be the man to beat in 2010. With Tiger’s absence, the No 1 spot could be in Phil’s reach, though I want to see it to believe it, as Tiger will be back sooner than later and for sure will have something to say about that. However, Team Mickelson has never seen their man more ready for a season, and, as Harmon said “more juiced.” Mickelson will turn 40 the Wednesday of the US Open at Pebble Beach, the course where he made his professional debut in 1992, and won three AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Ams. This week he’ll remember the kid who played around at Torrey Pines, but will enter the season as the best player in the game today. The man who plans to start 2010 as he finished 2009, the man everyone will want to beat, the man who’s only one thing to prove, if any, beat Tiger Woods and take the World No 1 ranking. Mickelson certainly played great golf at the end of last season, and finished with four PGA TOUR wins despite missing three months of action, but Tiger is still the best player in the world. The 2010 season promises some spectacular battles between the two champions. Meanwhile, we’ll see from Thursday on at Torrey Pines if Mickelson is as ready as he thinks he is. World No 2 Phil Mickelson‘s teeing up this week for his first 2010 season start at Torrey Pines, La Jolla, on what could be best described as a home course. He knows it better than anyone, even Tiger who’s had so much success there.
