Ben Crane captures first PGA TOUR event since 2005
Ben Crane captures first PGA TOUR event since 2005 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course, La Jolla, California
Ben Crane, who entered the last round Sunday two shots behind third round leader Japan’s Ryuji Imada, opened with three birdies on the first five holes to take the lead, including one from just over 45 feet at the 3rd. He extended his advantage to 3 shots with another 45-foot putt on the 11th, and hung on to win the tournament by one shot over fellow American Brandt Snedeker and Australia’s Marc Leishman and Michael Sim. Crane knocked a 30-inch par putt at the last hole for a 2-under 70 and 13-under aggregate, to end an almost five-year drought with a victory at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Robert Allenby made a charge with five birdies to pull within one stroke, but dropped five shots in four holes, including a triple bogey 7 at the 17th.

With a bogey at the 5-par 13th and another one at 17, Crane got to the 18th with a one shot margin over playing partner Sim, who stopped in surprise when his 15-footer ran over the side of the cup at the 17th. Had the ball dropped, Sim would have been tied with Crane when the 2-stroke leader missed his par putt.

Both laid up at the 18, and both put too much spin on their wedges, causing the ball to roll three feet off the green for Sim and against the collar for Crane.

Sim could have gone for the green in two, with a 3-wood from 249 yards, but decided not to risk the tournament with a shot he had to hit perfect. The amount of spin on his approach shot deprived him of a good look at birdie on the last hole.

Like Sim, Leishman and Snedeker failed to birdie 18, and Crane 2-putt for par gave him the win.

Michael Allen, with the best round of the day 7-under par 65, and Alex Prugh, with the second-best 66 finished tied fifth with Ernie Els (69) and Rickie Fowler (70).

After all the buzz about Phil Mickelson’s 2010 debut, the Californian, who started four shots behind on Sunday, bogeyed his first three holes and was never in contention. He shot 1-over par 73 and finished in 19th place at -8.

Crane, who didn’t know the result until Imada congratulated him on the 18th green, earned $954,000, 500 Fedex points, and a trip back to the Masters for the first time in three years. The victory should put him in the world top 60 and give him a chance to qualify for the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship. A nice career boost for the 33-year-old from Portland, Oregon.

This week the players tee-up at Riviera CC for the Northern Trust Open, where Mickelson will have the opportunity to defend his title.
