CHAMPIONS TOUR Azinger’s teeing up for the first time at the ACE Group Classic
CHAMPIONS TOUR Azinger’s teeing up for the first time at the ACE Group Classic Paul Azinger is making his Champions Tour debut this week at the ACE Group Classic at The Quarry in Naples, Fla. Azinger won 12 times on the PGA TOUR between 1987 and his final victory at the 2000 Sony Open.
He won the PGA Championship in 1993 in a playoff against Greg Norman, just before his career was interrupted for a while as he was diagnosed with lymphoma in his right shoulder.

In 2008, Azinger captained the United States to victory on the Ryder Cup, after representing the U.S. on five Ryder Cup teams as well as the 2000 Presidents Cup.

He’s not coming back for the money “If you’re eligible for this tour, you probably don’t need the money,” he said, or to fill up idle time. For Azinger it’s all about the competition.

“I still have that desire,” Paul said. “I still want to be able to compete…I look forward to playing the Champions Tour.” “Everybody that I’ve talked to says you’re going to love it and I can see that…” “I know every one of those names on the list. It’s a Who’s Who in the game of golf. It’s a shame the Champions Tour doesn’t get more pub or recognition. I get it. They’re older.”

“Everybody looks pretty young tome.” Azinger said.

Tommy Armour III is the other rookie starting this week, following Fred Couples and Corey Pavin who debuted in Hawaii three weeks ago. On Tuesday Fred Couples confirmed he will play at the ACE Group Classic, no doubt thrilled by his Hawaiian experience.

Couples finished second by just one stroke to 60-year-old Tom Watson, who edged his 10-year younger opponent finishing with birdies at 17 and 18.

With his victory at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship, Watson joined Gary Player as the only two men to win a PGA TOUR or Champions Tour title in five decades. Watson’s T8 last week at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic is the best finish ever on the European tour by a player &0 years or older.

The rookies better be ready if they want to take on Watson , Bernhard Langer, Loren Roberts, Fred Funk and the other champions. Couples can vouch for that, it must have stung when Watson edged him on the last hole in Hawaii.
