| PGA TOUR Johnson Back-To-Back Wins at Pebble Beach |
Dustin Johnson stood on the 18th tee of the famous finishing hole at Pebble Beach, tied first at -15 with David Duval and J.B. Holmes already in the club house. He turned away from the breathtaking scenery to face the toughest drive on the golf course. “It’s such a gorgeous hole,” Johnson said. “If you miss a little left, it’s not so pretty.” His drive was perfect, allowing him to go for the green with his second shot which ended in the front right bunker, the best place to miss. He splashed his bunker shot 3-feet from the hole, and sank the birdie putt to edge Duval and Holmes by one shot. Johnson closed with 2-over 74, the highest final round by a Pebble Beach champion since Johnny Miller (74) in 1994. The 25-year-old is the first player since Tiger Woods to go straight from college and win in each of his first three years on the PGA Tour. “All you can ask for is a chance to win on the last hole,” said Johnson. His playing partner and third round co-leader Paul Goydos – Johnson and Goydos started at – 18 Sunday – didn’t get that opportunity. Leading by one stroke on the par-5 14th, Goydos, leader by one, waited for his third shot as Bryce Molder took a 4-over nine on the hole, and also murdered the difficult hole taking a nine himself and dropping from -17 to -13, three shots of the lead. Goydos bogeyed the next hole, finishing tied 5th at 12 under with Josh Teater (69) and J.P. Hayes (72). Steve Marino took 4th place alone with a 71 on Sunday. “It wasn’t like I didn’t try on all nine shots,” Goydos said with his usual sense of humor. “The ninth one I really wasn’t all that excited about…” Duval put together his best four rounds in years –all in the 60s- but didn’t have the length to get home in two at the closing hole, not into the ocean breeze on soft fairways. He finished with a 3-under 69, tied for second place. Holmes has the length, but hit into the right rough –a popular spot- and had to lay up, missing a putt just outside 12 feet for his birdie. Johnson’s power, and his magnificent drive at the 18th made all the difference. He became the first player since Davis Love III in 2003 to win Pebble Beach with a birdie on the 72nd hole from the final group. Since Mark O’Meara accomplished the feat in 1990, nobody had won back-to-back at Pebble Beach, and that can only help Johnson with the US open coming to Pebble this summer. He earned $1,116,000 and 500 FeDex Cup points with this victory and moves to second place in the Ryder Cup standings. The other back-to-back winners at Pebble are all in the Hall of Fame – Sam Snead, Cary Middlecoff, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. “That’s not a bad list,” Johnson said. “Anytime you’re on a list with those guys, you’re doing all right.” Last year, Johnson walked off Spyglass Hill on a Saturday with a 4-shot lead and was declared the winner two days later when the tournament was shortened to 54 holes because of rain. He had to work harder this year, as he struggled in his last round. But his spectacular birdie at the closing hole gave him the victory, and he pumped his fist in celebration and relief after a long day on the spectacular Pebble Beach golf course. “Walking down that 18th hole with all the fans out there was just unbelievable, especially with the clear day,” Johnson said. “It’s one of the most beautiful holes in golf.” The PGA Tour next stop is in Mexico, at Riviera Maya-Cancun for the Mayakoba Golf Classic.
