| Fred Couples goes one better, wins in just his second CHAMPIONS TOUR start |
Couples closed with an 8-under 64 to finish at 17-under, holding off Tommy Armour III by only one stroke. Armour, making his Champions Tour debut, matched the tour record for lowest round in relation to par with an 11-under 61. Couples made eight birdies with no bogeys on Sunday, including a 5-footer at the 17 to claim his first official title since the PGA Tour’s 2003 Houston Open. It turned out that he needed every single one of those birdies, as Armour started his charge with an eagle on the par-5 seventh, and birdied 8, 9, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17, tying Couples with the last one on 17. Couples birdied four of the first five holes in the final round to push his lead to five strokes – six over Armour- , a big advantage on the field. “I thought that would easily be enough,”Couples said. “I hit an iron on the 15th green and I looked at the leaderboard and I was tied and seriously was shocked.” His birdie at 17 was just enough to seal the victory, one better than his finish in Hawaii when Tom Watson birdied the last two holes to beat him by one stroke. Couples and Armour really played great golf at the Quarry, the 2008 champion Scott Hoch finished third with a 69 at 9-under, eight shots behind Couples. Bernhard Langer and Mike Goodes tied for fourth at 8 under. Paul Azinger, who also made his debut, finished T21 at 1 under par. There are some new kids on the block in the Champions Tour, and they’re starting with guns blazing. Watch out!
