Geoff Ogilvy defends title at WGC – Accenture Match Play Championship
Geoff Ogilvy defends title at WGC – Accenture Match Play Championship Defending champion Australian Geoff Ogilvy tees up against Sweden’s Alexander Noren Wednesday at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain – Arizona, in the first round of the World Golf Championships – Accenture Match Play Championship.

Ogilvy started his 2010 campaign on the PGA Tour with a victory at the SBS Championship in Hawaii, showing he’s in great form to try to repeat last year’s stellar performance at the Accenture Match Play Championship when he defeated England’s Paul Casey in the final match. The Aussie is a big favorite on his first-round match against Noren.

With some great matchups in the first round, we’ll see who will survive the first day in the Arizona desert. The first matches always are a difficult test for the top players, and a chance to shine for the underdogs. Nothing is written in match-play format.

However, World N0 2 and winner at Riviera two weeks ago Steve Stricker should have no problem to go through against Ross McGowan (ENG).

Ryo Ishikawa faces Aussie Michael Sim, and though the young Japanese is favorite, Sim could create a surprise.

In an all-American clash, Anthony Kim looks like he could take on Matt Kuchar, but Kuchar played very well at the end of the 2009 season, while Kim has been struggling with injuries. I’ll choose the underdog, Kuchar, in that matchup.

Last week’s champion at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Dustin Johnson faces Columbian sensation Camillo “Spiderman” Villegas in what should be an interesting contest.

Johnson, in my opinion the young player with the brightest future on Tour, will certainly pass that hurdle.

Martin Kaymer comes into his third Accenture Match Play Championship as the No 1 seed in the Ben Hogan’s bracket, looking to make a name for himself on the golf world stage.

The 25-year-old German has already won five times on the European Tour, and looks like he’s Bernhard Langer’s successor for Germany’s golf hopes. He’ll be at risk, though being favorite, in his first round against seasoned American Chad Campbell.

Only 32 men will be left standing Wednesday evening, that’s the tough, though beautiful part of Match-play championships.
