| ELS vs GOOSEN South African clash Thursday at Accenture Match Play in Arizona |
England’s Ross McGowan, the lowest-seeded player in the tournament, pulled off the biggest upset of the first round at the WGC – Accenture Match Play Championship by eliminating top-seed and world No 2 Steve Stricker in 19 holes. Stricker went 2 up after three holes, but Mac Gowan fought back with 5 birdies from the 5th hole to the 15th to take a 1-shot lead. The American birdied 16 to square the match, but plugged his approach to the green on the 19th hole and made bogey, leaving an opening for the Englishman who didn’t squandered the chance and eliminated the highest- ranked player in the championship. In the same Bobby Jones bracket, seed No 15 Jeev Milkha Singh took out second- seed Padraig Harrington 3 and 1, 12-seed Thongchai Jaidee defeated 5-seed Ross Fisher 5 and 4, and Adam Scott eliminated Masters champion Angel Cabrera 3 and 2. In the Gary Player bracket, former winner and 2-seed Henrik Stenson conceded the match after just one hole due to illness, giving way to Ben Crane. No 14 seed Brian Gay, making his debut in the Accenture Match Play, upset 3-seed Kenny Perry 2 and 1 in the Sam Snead bracket. This was Perry third consecutive first-round loss in the tournament. Other than Stricker, the No 1 seeds Martin Kaymer Lee Westwood and Jim Furyk are through to the second round. On Thursday’s second round, besides Els/Goosen, the matchups between Ian Poulter and Adam Scott, Martin Kaymer vs Tim Clark, Robert Allenby vs Luke Donald, Sean O’Hair vs Stewart Cink and defending champion Geoff Ogilvy vs Camilo Villegas look like the most interesting to follow. Everything can happen in match-play golf, nobody is safe on an 18 holes contest. Surely Thursday’s second round in the Arizona desert will bring its harvest of upsets, same as it happened on Wednesday. In a first round marked by numerous upsets, Ernie Els beat Ryan Moore 4 and 3 and Retief Goosen Soren Hansen to set up a fascinating matchup between the two South African golf stars. Els is the man in form, with top-15 finishes in his last three starts, but Goosen is more comfortable in match play. This match will be fun to watch, too bad it came so early in the tournament.
