Defending champion Y.E.Yang enters The Honda Classic in top form At this time last year few people knew the South Korean player. That was before Y.E. Yang won the 2009 Honda Classic, his first PGA TOUR title, and then stunned the world of golf by beating Tiger Woods at the PGA Championship in a memorable last-round duel, becoming the first Asian player to win a major.

Yang is going into The Honda Classic on Thursday having made five cuts in the five tournaments he entered in 2010. He almost pulled a win last week in Phoenix, finishing third alone after holding the lead at the 15th hole on Sunday.

The odds are looking good for a repeat at The Honda Classic.

The Champion Course at PGA National Resort and Spa, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., is ranked ninth most difficult on the TOUR’s schedule. Designed by Tom Fazio and redesigned later by Jack Nicklaus, the Champion offers many challenges, including the holes No. 15, 16 and 17 which have been given the name “The Bear Trap”. Those par 3, 4 and 3, each with demanding tee shots to small landing zones, have seen the scores increase over the past three years and are key to success at The Honda Classic.

Young guns Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler are expected to get their first win soon on the PGA TOUR. McIlroy tied for 13th last year in this event and everybody sees in him the next World No.1, while Fowler has two top-5s this season, including a runner-up finish to Hunter Mahan last week.

Robert Allenby, one of the best ball-striker on tour, has always done well in Florida over the years. He comes off a T8th last week at the Phoenix Open and seems ripe to come back to the winners’ circle.

Camilo Villegas is showing the same form he displayed at the end of 2008 with two top-10s in two starts. El “Hombre Araña” nearly won here in 2007, losing in a playoff to Mark Wilson.

England’s Lee Westwood is at the top of his game, his impressive victory at the European Tour finale and two top-3s overseas in 2010 should give him the necessary confidence to finally win in the States.

These are some of the players that should be in contention this week in a very strong field at the Honda Classic. Check out the odds and the pairings at BetPhoenix.com Sportsbook and put a wager on your favorite players.
