| 48 of the World Rankings’ Top 50 Players have committed to the WGC-CA Championship |
World No.2 Steve Stricker and World No.3 and defending champion Phil Mickelson lead a very strong field this week at the TPC Blue Monster at Doral in Miami, Florida, followed by a trio of Englishmen ranked Nos. 4-6 in Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter (who won the first World golf Championships event of the year in Arizona), and Paul Casey who was runner-up to Poulter at the Accenture Match Play tournament. Of the players who qualified for the CA Championship, only Tiger Woods and Ryo Ishikawa are not competing. Ishikawa, who won his first Japan Golf Tour event as a 15-year-old amateur, was graduating from his high school in Japan last Monday. Mickelson went 26 tries without winning a WGC event before beating Nick Watney by one stroke last year in this event. However, Phil added a second WGC title to his resume soon after when he captured the HSBC event in Shanghai in November, the first year it was part of the World Golf Championships series. “It’s very cool to win these events,” Mickelson said. “I didn’t know how cool it would be, because these events are fairly new. But now that they have been around for almost, I guess, 10 years now, their status continues to grow in the game, and to win a couple is important to my career I believe.” Mickelson’s set to defend his title, but his rather pedestrian start of the 2010 season doesn’t make him the favorite to do it. Camilo Villegas is again my top pick, the Columbian star just put on a clinic last week in a five-shot victory over Anthony Kim at The Honda Classic , and is very capable of winning in consecutive weeks - he did it in 2008 at the BMW and TOUR championships. “Spiderman” doesn’t have to travel 2,600 miles in three days this week, and he tied for 5th last year at the Blue Monster. With a win and 2 top-10 finishes in three starts this year, Villegas tops the Tour in scoring average and earnings. Stricker won his last stroke-play start at Rivera, and hasn’t shot above par in 12 rounds in 2010. The always subdued World No.2 should be in contention at Doral. Anthony Kim hasn’t put four consecutive rounds together, rebounding from terrible third rounds the last two weeks with 67s. That should give him some confidence, and he’s very close to his best form. Vijay Singh was back on the front page of the leaderboard last week, with his first top-five finish since consecutive victories in the 2008 FedEx Cup playoffs. The 47-year-old is always a threat when the putter helps. Paul Casey is playing great golf, three top-10s on as many starts this season prove it. The Englishman has been in contention in all three tournaments, he needs to close the deal and that very well come at the CA Championship. Everybody’s waiting for Rory McIlroy’s tremendous talent to explode on the PGA Tour. Will the Irish young player conquer the Blue Monster? Length won’t be an issue for the 20-year-old.
