| A bogey-free round 67 gives Schwartzel a one-shot lead at the WGC-CA Championship |

It didn’t bothered Charl Schwartzel, though, who had five birdies and no bogeys for a 5-under 67 and a 1-shot lead over Robert Allenby, Vijay Singh and Ernie Els, all victims of the tough 18th Hole. Schwartzel, who got into the elite field by virtue of two victories early in the season in his native South Africa, got the toughest part of the course –namely par-4 No.18- out of the way early because he started on the back nine. He was one of the few players who made par on that hole that averaged 4.65 strokes, higher than three of the par 5s. “I didn’t think 67 was out there at the beginning of the day, with the wind as strong as it was,” said Schwartzel. “Early on, I made five birdies, which I thought you could do, especially with three par 5s downwind. Some of them you’re hitting wedge. The big achievement for me today was not making any bogeys. That kept the scorecard very clean.” Robert Allenby looked like he was playing a different golf course, taking a five-shot lead at 8 under par through 12 holes, but the Australian stumbled badly down the stretch, with 4 consecutive bogeys to finish his round. However, the Australian shot 68 and found perspective quickly: “That’s the way things go. If someone had said you’re going to shoot 4 under today, I would have taken it.” Singh took the lead after a sensational approach shot at the 17, leading to a tap-in birdie and 6-under par, but sent his tee shot in the water at 18 for a double bogey to finish at -4. “I’ m pleased with what I did today,” the 47-year-old from Fidji Islands said. “Making a double on the last, it doesn’t leave a good taste in your mouth. But you know, thank God it’s on Thursday.” Ernie Els had a share of the lead when he arrived at the 18th, until his approach around the palm trees came up short and into the water. He made bogey and left Schwartzel alone at the top of the leaderboard. Defending champion Phil Mickelson, who didn’t arrived in Miami until Wednesday, was pleased with his opening 71. “I know it’s not in contention yet, but my goal was to shoot something solid and improve on it each day. So I have to go lower each day,” Mickelson said. That sounds like Phil is running out of excuses for his disappointing start of the season. Everybody was waiting on a great 2010 from the world No.3 (including him), with the absence of Tiger and all, but Mickelson and his reinforced coaching team haven’t produced any fireworks yet. Italy’s Francesco Molinari was tied for the lead until he also went into the water at 18 and made double bogey, finishing with 69 at 3-under in a group that included Dustin Johnson, Paul Casey, J.B. Holmes, Soren Hansen and John Senden. Last week’s winner Camilo Villegas is five shots off the pace at level par. Tee times were moved up Friday with storms in the forecast for the afternoon. The 18th hole will be again the main threat for the second round at the TPC Blue Monster in Doral.
