Els pulls away down the stretch to capture CA Championship
Els pulls away down the stretch to capture CA Championship South African Ernie Els shot a bogey-free 6 under par 66 on Sunday at the Blue Monster in Miami to win the World Golf Championships-CA Championship, ending the longest drought of his career -two years without a victory.

Nothing was easy for “The Big Easy” on the last round, as his playing partner and protégé fellow countryman Charl Schwartzel kept close until the last few holes. A flawless finish gave Els a four-shot victory over Schwartzel who stumbled with bogeys at 15 and 17.

“I’m 40 years old. I’ve had a tough run,” Els said. “Whew! The hairs are standing up. It’s just great.”

Sports betting is fun, but only in Golf you can pick a 40-year-old against his 25-year-old protégé. Schwartzel took part in Els’s junior program in South Africa. They started last on Sunday tied at 12- under, however, for a share of the lead going into the last round. What are the odds?

Els finished at 18-under 270 for his 17th win on the PGA TOUR, and 61st worldwide. He earned $1.4 million and 550 FedExCup points that moved him in the standings third place, 16 points behind leader Steve Stricker.

Els is back among the elite in golf at No. 8 in the world, and became only the fifth player with multiple wins in the Worl Golf Championships, joining Tiger Woods, Darren Clarke, Geoff Ogilvy and Phil Mickelson.

Els has been working hard on his game, ad practiced until twilight in the days preceding Doral. He had to put it to the test in a final round that was much closer than the winning margin -4 strokes- might lead you to think.

Schwartzel never backed down, and Els was clinging to a 1-shot lead standing over a 25-foot par putt at the 14th hole that would have tied the contest. Els’ putt went in, Schwartzel bogeyed 15 and 17 while Els birdied 17 and that was it.

“I just wanted to prove to myself for once,” Els said. “Charl came at me all day. I had to come up with the goods.”

Schwartzel was staying at Els’ house the last two weeks, the bad break he caught at the 15 -finding his ball plugged in a front bunker- that led to a bogey might have cost him the tournament. He finished with a 70 that earned him $850,000 and he will be able to take up PGA TOUR membership next year.

“All credit to Ernie. He plated flawless golf today,” said Schwartzel. I thought I played really good, gave a good charge. I was on his heels all the time.”

No one else was in the hunt. Padraig Harrington, who started the day one shot behind the leaders, never got anything going. He closed with a 72, tied third with Matt Kuchar (68), and young German Martin Kaymer (69) who posted his best result on the Tour.

Defending champion Phil Mickelson closed with a 68 on his final round that gave him a tie for 14th.

Els looks like he’s ready to make a bid at The Masters, but next up is his charity event on Monday to raise money for autism. It’s a major cause for Ernie since he learned that his 7-year-old son Ben is autistic, and els says he is a few years away from appreciating what his father accomplished Sunday.

“We’ll show him the tape,” Els said. “I think he’ll get excited about it.” BetPhoenix offers you the best Golf betting options and the best Bonus Packages to get you started in Sports betting.
