| Derek Lamely claimed the Puerto Rico Open with two superb rounds on Sunday and Monday |
The 29-year-old American closed with a bogey-free 6-under-par 66 on Monday to capture the title at Trump International Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. Lamely had to deal with rain delays, a soggy golf course and the inevitable nerves to notch his first win on the PGA TOUR. He finished at 19- under par 269, setting a tournament record at the beautiful 7,526-yard golf course, beating Kris Blanks by two strokes. Having posted a 69 and a 71 in his first two rounds, Lamely was nowhere in sight going in the last two rounds. A 9-under-par course record on Sunday, including 10 birdies and just one bogey, catapulted him in 4th place, 4 shots from the Sunday night leader Kevin Streelman. His mistake-free 66 on his last round was worth $630,000, and PGA TOUR playing privileges through 2012. Nobody would have bet on Lamely on Saturday night, that’s the beauty of Golf-betting. Lamely teed off on No. 10 in the final round, the first player to win in that position since Keith Clearwater at the 1987 Colonial Invitational. Despite that the top players were at the WGC-CA Championship in Miami, the rookie was thrilled with the victory, having defeated a strong field nevertheless for his first title. “I’m still a rookie out here, even though I just won. There’s tons I can learn still,” he said. Lamely had to watch his competitors for more than two hours to see if he would be overtaken or forced into a playoff, but nobody could catch him. However, that can’t be good for your ulcers. The eventual champion, who spent much of the first two days of the rain-delayed event in his hotel bed, relaxed between rounds by fishing off the coastal course. He said he caught a few, but he landed the big one when he won the third Puerto Rico Open on the challenging Rio Grande’s course. “It’s just a fun golf course. You can be very creative and you can play well,” said Lamely. “And the golf course can get you too, real quick.” This week a full field will tee up at the Transitions Championship in Tampa Bay, Florida.
