Couples goes three in a row on the Champions Tour with win at Cap Cana
Couples goes three in a row on the Champions Tour with win at Cap Cana Fred Couples is unstoppable in his rookie year on the Champions Tour. He shot a course record 10-under par 62 on Sunday at Punta Espada Golf Club in Dominican Republic to claim his third victory in four starts, and his third consecutive one.

He made 11 birdies in the final round to finish the tournament at 21-under 195, beating Corey Pavin by two shots.

“It was an unbelievable day,” said Couples who made five birdies in a row from the second through sixth hole. “The first six or seven holes, there was an eagle, birdies and putts going in from everywhere.”

Everybody was waiting for Couples’ appearance on the 50-and-over Tour, and most expected the 15-time PGA TOUR winner and Masters champion to do well. Nobody, though, could have predicted such a spectacular start.

Freddy’s third consecutive win tied Jay Haas’ 2006 record, and he became the first player to win three times in his first four starts. He only lost his on his first showing in Hawaii, when Tom Watson birdied the final two holes on Sunday to snatch the victory by just one shot.

Couples has earned $931,000 and leads the money list by $431,000.He’s on top of the Charles Schwab Cup standings with 931 points, almost twice as many as his closest pursuer Bernhard Langer with 479.

It’s a long season, but I don’t see anybody catching the rookie anytime soon.

Couples began the day two strokes behind Pavin and one behind Nick Price.

Despite a great 66 on his final round, Pavin was unable to recover from a bad break at the 14th hole. His approach shot on the 4 par hit a sprinkler head and bounced 60 yards over the green, causing him to lose the lead for the first time since the seventh hole.

Couples reeled in five more birdies in a row from the 11-15 and maintained a one-shot lead over Pavin. A final birdie at the par-4 17th secured a two-strokes victory at Cap Cana.

Russ Cochran, Tom Pernice and Bernhard Langer, all with 67s, finished tied for third.

“I had a great stretch of golf in 1992,” said Couples who won three tournaments, including the Masters, in a two month period then, “but I must say that these four weeks on the Champions Tour I’m not missing any shots.”

Everybody will be chasing Couples at the Outback Steackhouse Pro-am in Tampa Bay on April 16-18, the next stop on the Champions Tour. Before that, Freddy will messure himself to the PGA TOUR youngsters at the Houston Open this week and at the Masters the following one.
