| Els clinches second straight victory on PGA TOUR |
The South African had won the WGC-CA Championship on March 14, this second win 1n 2010 makes him the man to beat at the Masters next week. Els has been extremely consistent all year, with 5 top-10s in seven starts, and has fared well at Augusta National with six career top-10s. However, the “Big Easy” has never earned the coveted Green Jacket, though he might think that the Masters owes him one. “I think I’ll jinx myself saying that,” said Els. “But I would say this: I know the history of Augusta well, and there’s been a lot of nice stories. There’s has been a lot of cruel ones, thinking of Tom Weiskopf and Greg Norman, but there’s also been some really great ones, so we still are hopping for the great one.” Els finished his last four holes on Monday, after approaching thunderstorms stopped play Sunday afternoon. That could have helped him, as he squandered a 5-shot lead and six holes to play with a double bogey at 13 and bogey at 14. Ernie came back fresh on Monday and took home his 2-shot advantage at 11-under par to beat Edoardo Molinari and Kevin Na who finished tied second at -9. “The last 20 hours I couldn’t stop thinking about trying to finish this thing,” Els said. Els earned $1,080,000, and 500 FedExCup points that propelled him to the top of the Standings with 1,320 total, almost 400 more than Steve Stricker in second place. Fellow countryman Retief Goosen closed with a 69 to finish T4 with Chris Couch (71). Arnold’s grandson Sam Saunders delighted the whole Palmer family by making the cut at his famous grandfather’s tournament. He shot 72 on his last round and finished T50. Els became the first multiple winner on the PGA TOUR this season by winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational. It was not easy, though, as he said on Sunday afternoon it was going to be a restless night thinking about 13 and 14. In fact he went to Lake Nona early Monday morning and hit balls in the rain preparing for the final four holes. A well deserved victory for the South African who will go into the Masters next week as the man to beat.
