Els, Mickelson and Casey lead a strong field at the Shell Houston Open
Els, Mickelson and Casey lead a strong field at the Shell Houston Open Ernie Els is riding a hot streak. After his Monday win at Bay Hill, his second victory in as many starts, the South African flew to Augusta to check out the Masters’ setup and made it to Houston in time for his Wednesday pro-am.

Can he go three in a row?

Check out the odds at BetPhoenix.com Sportsbook and don’t forget “The Big Easy” (Els’ nickname) in your picks. BetPhoenix offers you the best options in Golf Betting and in all Sports Betting.

Everybody’s still waiting for Phil Mickelson’s big run in 2010. With Tiger Woods out, the World No. 3 was expected to have a banner year following preseason preparations with his various coaches. The results didn’t reach the expectations, as Phil’s play didn’t measure up to all the noise created around his two victories over Tiger at the end of 2009, including the PGA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP.

However, Lefty is the last TOUR player to win the week before Augusta and then go back-to-back at the Masters when he claimed the Green Jacket in 2006.

Paul Casey is the defending champion at Redstone Golf Club, the Englishman has four top-10s in four starts including a T4 at the Honda Classic and T6 at Doral. His combination of power, precision and deadly putting make him a perfect candidate to repeat last year’s feat.

Padraig Harrington has been able to close the deal in his last showings, but his game is coming around and he’s been working hard on his short game. The Irishman should be in contention this week.

Young guns Kevin Streelman, Anthony Kim, Bubba Watson and Germany’s Martin Kaymer are looking to make some noise on TOUR, this is a good opportunity for them to notch a win.

Fred Couples just won his third straight title in 4 starts on the Champions Tour (he was runner-up to Tom Watson at the season opener in Hawaii), he also finished T3 last year here and T4 in 2008. Although the 50-year-old is a long shot, nobody (save Els) will enter the Houston with more confidence.
