Kim wins Shell Houston in playoff
Kim wins Shell Houston in playoff Anthony Kim defeated Vaughn Taylor in the first playoff hole on Sunday to claim his third PGA TOUR title.

Kim, in the last group, had a 2-shot lead over Taylor going into the final hole. Taylor, playing right in front, birdied the last hole and Kim missed a 6-foot par putt to win. They finished tied at 12-under 76, but Kim’s par as they played the 18th again as the first playoff hole was enough to beat Taylor who made bogey.

Kim kept his composure after the bad putt to end the round in regulation, something he confessed he might have not been capable of not so long ago : “Two years ago, that bag may have been in the water. I might not have had clubs to go to the playoff. But I just feel calm out there, I feel no sense of urgency. It’s something that’s happened naturally and not something that’s been forced. I’m comfortable with who I am out there. I found my identity.”

Taylor, who finished with a 68, was heartbroken by the close loss. He needed the victory to qualify for the Masters next week in his hometown of Augusta, Ga.

“Hugely disappointed,” Taylor said. “It’s a tough pill to swallow.”

The 24-year-old Kim, who closed with a 70, won for the first time since the 2008 AT&T National. He was hampered by injuries in 2009, and is still suffering from torn ligaments in his left thumb. He’s planning for surgery right after the Masters.

He says he’s playing with pain in his left hand, the $1,044 million prize money and the 500 FeDexCup points he earned on Sunday will help to forget about the discomfort .

Charl Schwartzel with 67 and Graham DeLaet (68) finished T3 one stroke behind at 11 under. Shaun Micheel shot the best round of the day 65 and jumped from 21st on Saturday to 5th place alone.

Kim only hit 23 of 56 fairways in his four rounds, pulling an amazing victory from the fourth-lowest total since 1983.

“I was in some spots of the golf course I never thought I could possibly see,” said Kim. “But I got out of those with pars and birdies and feel very confident going into next week.”

Phil Mickelson finished 2 under par for the tournament after a 71 on Sunday. He double-bogeyed three of his first 10 holes, then made six straight birdies to match the best streak on TOUR this year. It’s never boring to follow Phil on the course, especially when he’s hitting less than 50% of the fairways.

This week, the best golfers in the world will compete in the first major of 2010, the Masters Tournament at Augusta. Everybody is waiting for Tiger Woods’ return to competition.
