Choi and Kuchar lead a strong field at the Verizon Heritage
Choi and Kuchar lead a strong field at the Verizon Heritage After all the excitement following Tiger’s return to competitive golf last week at the Masters, the PGA Tour is back to normal. The players will fight, starting Thursday, for the Verizon Heritage title at Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island.

Korea’s K.J. Choi played his four rounds at the Masters last week with Tiger Woods, and matched the World No. 1 score on each day, finishing tied for fourth place with Tiger in the first major tournament of the year.

Despite the huge crowds who followed the threesome, which included Matt Kuchar on Thursday and Friday, Choi did better than holding his own. The Korean was tied for the lead after the 12th hole at Augusta National on Sunday. Bogeys at 13 and 14 ended his hopes to become the second Asian player to win a major -Y.E. Yang won the PGA Championship last year.

Although he hasn’t play at Harbour Town since 2001, Choi should be a factor this week.

Matt Kuchar did all right after being paired with Woods on his first two rounds, finishing 24th. He’s been all over the leaderboards this year, with three top-3 finishes. Kuch will be more relaxed and could capitalize on his past two top-10s finishes at the Heritage (T7 in 2008, T10 in 2005).

Vaughn Taylor comes off a major disappointment, losing in a playoff at the Shell Houston Open when a victory would have got him in the Masters in his home town. He has three top-10s in eight starts this season, and also has two top-5s at Harbour Town. A win would help him forget the pain of the playoff loss to Anthony Kim two weeks ago.

I expected Camilo Villegas to do better than his T38 finish at the Masters. However, “Spiderman” started the season with a third, a T8 and a win, and his worst finish here the last three years is a T37. He should be fighting for the title this weekend.

Defending champion Brian Gay missed the cut at Bay Hill and at the Masters, but Harbour Town suits his game perfectly. Besides last year’s win, he was T16 in ’07 and T9 in ’06. A good place for him to turn his game around.

Let’s not forget Jim Furyk, who’s sixth all time in earnings at Harbour Town. He has a love-hate relationship with this course, either missing the cut or finishing in the top-5. He’ll be looking to rebound from a miss-cut at Augusta National last week.

Ricky Barnes had a very good showing at the Masters with a T10 finish, the former U.S. Amateur champion will be soon in the winner’s circle, it’s just a matter of time.

Brandt Snedeker, who trains at Sea Island, should feel at home on Hilton Head Island. He’s one of the bets putters on TOUR and is ready to win.
