Furyk claims his second victory in one month on the PGA TOUR
Furyk claims his second victory in one month on the PGA TOUR Jim Furyk beat England’s Brian Davis on the first playoff hole at Harbour Town to capture the Verizon Heritage title, his second win in 2010 – he won the Transitions Championship on March 21 in Palm Harbour.

Furyk joined Ernie Els as the only two multiple winners this season on the PGA TOUR. Els won the WGC –CA Championship at Doral on March 14 and the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill two weeks later.

It was an unusual finish, as Davis called a penalty on himself during the first playoff hole that cost him two strokes and gave the victory to Furyk.

Davis’ 7-iron approach shot to the 18th green on the first sudden-death hole hit the left edge of the green, rattled off the rocks and settled among some twigs and reeds. Davis’ violation of rule against moving a loose impediment during a takeaway was only discernible in slow motion replays, but he asked for tournament director Slugger White who consulted with officials who checked TV replays.

“It was one of those things. I thought I saw movement out of the corner of my eye. And I thought we’d check on TV and Indeed there was movement,” said Davis.

He immediately conceded victory to Furyk, who putted out for his 15th PGA Tour win. Furyk shot 2-under 69 on Sunday to finish at -13 for the tournament. Davis had a 68, and led by one stroke before he bogeyed 15 and 16.

“It’s just awkward to see it happen at such a key moment in the golf tournament,” Furyk said. “Awkward for him to lose that way, and a little awkward for me to win.”

What Davis lost on the course will be regained in his reputation for his honorable act, White said, adding: “That will come back to him spades, tenfold.”

Before the unfortunate ending, Davis had birdied the 18th in regulation to force a playoff, but the Englishman will have to wait for his first PGA TOUR win.

Furyk finally tasted victory at Harbour Town after two runner-up finishes and a fourth since 2005. He earned $1, 026,000 million and 500 FeDexCup points that sent him to second place on the Standings for the first time in his career - 175 pts behind Els.

Bo Van Pelt and Luke Donald finished T3 at -10, Camilo Villegas, Ricky Barnes and Kris Blanks T5 at -9.

Tiger Woods has announced his participation in the Quail Hollow Championship in a couple of weeks. It looks like the World No. 1 is ready to resume his normal playing schedule, we can expect to see him at THE PLAYERS Championship, the Memorial Tournament and then at the U.S. Open where he already submitted.
