Jason Bohn went wire-to-wire for his second PGA TOUR victory
Jason Bohn went wire-to-wire for his second PGA TOUR victory Jason Bohn won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans by two strokes over Jeff Overton, the first wire-to-wire victory at this event since Calvin Pete in 1986.

Bohn shot a 5-under 67 on his final round to finish at 18-under 270, birdying three of the last four holes to claim his second PGA Tour victory after a five-year drought (he won the 2005 BC Open).

“This is life changing,” said the 37-year old, who admitted making his putt on 18 with tears in his eyes.

I don’t know if anybody has picked the winner, or any of the players in contention on Sunday at the Zurich Classic. Don’t get me wrong, all those guys are good, but I was wondering what tournament I was watching as I barely recognize the names on the front page of the leaderboard.

Bohn led since he shot 65 in his opening round at TPC Louisiana on Thursday, followed by 67 on Friday, and 71 on Saturday’s weather-plagued round that he finished on Sunday morning.

The 37-year-old successfully sustained the challenges of runner-up Overton and of Troy Merritt –third place alone at -14-, both looking for their first PGA TOUR win. Bohn took control of the tournament when he birdied 15 after a magnificent approach to six feet of the flag from 218 yards, and sank a 22-foot putt at 16 for another birdie and a two-stroke lead.

Overton, however, reached the green of the par-5 final hole in two, setting a long putt for eagle and a possible tie with Bohn. The leader gave him no chance, though, almost holing his approach third-shot that rested a few inches behind the cup for a tap-in birdie.

Bohn earned $1,152,000, the biggest payday of his career, after making $395,321 in his eight previous starts in 2010. He turned pro in 1992. When he won a $1 million in a hole-in-one contest while a student at the University of Alabama.

Overton closed with a 66, matching his best finish, a runner-up at the 2007 Wyndham championship.

Troy Merritt, a true rookie on Tour, had missed the cut in his last seven starts after making the first three. He was 7 under during a seven-hole stretch that ended at the 13th, making five birdies and an eagle to take the lead briefly. A bogey at 14 and four pars on the closing holes weren’t good enough to threaten Bohn and Overton any longer.

“It’s fun when you’re making a lot of red numbers,” Merritt said. “Especially when they’re back to back to back to back.”

Lee Jantzen, a two-time major winner, got on the front page of the leaderboard when he holed his second shot at the par-4 13th. He finished fourth alone at -13, followed by Greg Chalmers in fifth one stroke behind.

Sunday’s victory, which came after a variety of injuries and back surgery, was especially sweet, Bohn said: “I want to take this one to the grave. I want to remember every little detail that I missed on my first one.”

With this win, Bohn moved into 11th place in FeDexCup standings, 647 points behind leader Ernie Els. He also got a two-year exemption on Tour and will be in the 2011 Masters.

I doubt that we’ll see such a strange leaderboard this week at the Quail Hollow Championship in Charlotte, with World No.1 Tiger Woods and Masters Champion Phil Mickelson leading a very strong field. The big guns will battle it out, it should be a lot of fun.
