Price helps O’Meara to first Champions Tour win
Price helps O’Meara to first Champions Tour win Mark O’Meara and Nick Price defeated Joey Sindelar and John Cook on the second playoff hole Sunday to win the better-ball Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf in Savannah, Georgia.

O’Meara had nine runner-up finishes since he joined the Champions Tour in 2007, including last week’s to Bernhard Langer at the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am, but victory had been eluding the 1998 Masters and British Open winner for more than three years with the 50-and-over champions.

His partner Nick Price helped when he won the second playoff hole, making a 7-foot par putt when they returned to the brutal 18th after both teams bogeyed it the first timearound.

“It’s very special, obviously,” O’Meara said. I’ve been practicing hard and I’ve finished second a number of times. Having Nick as a partner out there helped a lot. To be honest, I was relaxed out there.”

It was a big relief for O’Meara to finally clinch his first win, although this one might have slipped away too: Cook missed a 4-foot putt that would have won the tournament on the final hole of regulation.

“We dodged a bullet there,” Price said. “I feel bad for John, too, because he was playing the best of all of us today…I’m really happy for Mark and I’m happy because it’s been over a year since I’ve won.”

That should take the monkey off of O’Meara’s shoulders, and send him on his way to individual victories.

Cook/Sindelar (61) and O’Meara/Price (62) finished at 28-under 188 in the 54-hole event at Savannah Harbour Golf Resort, Andy Bean and Lu Chien-Soon (64) were one stroke back , and the favorite teams at the start of the tournament Bernhard Langer/Tom Lehman (63) and Fred Couples/Jay Haas (64) tied for fourth at 23 under.

Ken Green, who was making his Champions Tour return since having his lower leg amputated after a car accident last June that killed his brother and girlfriend, teamed with Mike Reid and tied for 26th at 12 under.

Green is weighing whether to play in this week’s Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic.

“I’ve got to learn to play those courses again. I’m not sure the time is right now…If the nerves (in my lower leg) settle down and I can make the changes I need to make in my swing, I can do this.” Green said. “And I desperately want to do this.”
