| Rory McIlroy fired a course record 62 Sunday to claim his first victory on American soil |
The 20-year-old of Northern Ireland, who celebrates his 21th birthday on Tuesday, became the youngest winner on the PGA TOUR since Tiger Woods won his first TOUR event in Las Vegas in 2006 (20 years and 10 months). Nobody would have put a penny on McIlroy Friday night, as he just made the cut on the number. That’s the beauty of Golf Betting, you have a chance if you’re playing on the weekend. McIlroy was on the verge of missing his third cut in a row, standing two shots over the cut line on Friday afternoon with three holes to play. He fired a 4-iron from 206 yards into the breeze and over the water to 6 feet for an eagle at the par-5 7th (he started on the 10th tee) to make the cut right on the number. He thinks this was the most important shot he hit all year, the one that eventually allowed him to capture his first PGA TOUR title. “The rest is history,” said MCIlroy. Not that his Sunday record-breaking round lacked spectacular shots, he was five under in the last five holes, with five 3s on the back nine, including an eagle at the 15, and eight total on his mistake-free scorecard. What a round! The young Irishman beat 2010 Masters champion Phil Mickelson, no less, by four strokes, and two-time Masters winner Angel Cabrera by 5. It’s not that Mickelson or Cabrera played badly, they both shot 68 on the final round at the difficult Quai Hollow golf course, but McIlroy was riding a motorcycle while they were pedaling on their bikes. McIlroy’s win capped a big Sunday for the golf’s two brightest young stars. Earlier in the day, 18-year-old Ryo Ishikawa became the first to shoot 58 on a major tour, winning on the Japan Golf Tour. “I suppose (I got into the zone,” said McIlroy. “I hadn’t realized I was going 9, 10 under. I just know I got my nose in front and I was just trying to stay there.” McIlroy became the first player since Chris Couch at New Orleans in 2006 to make the cut on the number and win the tournament. He was a staggering 16-under par on the weekend, finishing at 15 under 273 to win $1.17 million. Not a bad early birthday present. Tiger Woods broke a record, too, one he would have liked to avoid. He missed the cut for the sixth time, shooting the worst 36-hole score (153) of his career. McIlroy finished in style, drilling a 43-foot putt on the last hole that sent the patrons around the 18th green on their feet, to notch the lowest final round by a winner on the PGA TOUR in six years. “It’s one of those moments that you’ll always remember,” Rory said. “When it went in, I couldn’t believe it. I looked at (my caddy) J.P. and I was like, this was incredible.” McIlroy plans to keep his 11 a.m. tee time on Monday on the Stadium Course with Adam Scott, but will reserve Tuesday to celebrate his 21st birthday. “I’ll have a good time Tuesday night, (but)not too good,” McIlroy said with a huge grin on his face. “I’ll have to try and prepare properly for the tournament. It’s a huge week coming up as well.” “He’s got all the shots, he’s got the game of a veteran and he’s a class act,” said Mickelson. “He’s fun to be around. You can’t help but pull for him.” Phil, however, will be trying to win The Players at TPC Sawgrass, where he’ll enter as the favorite after his win at the Masters and his runner-up finish Sunday. McIlroy will be one of his close pursuers on the betting list this week. Check out the odds and the pairings at BetPhoenix.com Sportsbook and put a wager on your favorite players on each round.
