Hunter Mahan plays in his backyard at the HP Byron Nelson Championship
Hunter Mahan plays in his backyard at the HP Byron Nelson Championship Dallas resident Hunter Mahan lives near TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas, and is the top-ranked player (17th) in the field at the HP Byron Nelson Championship. Although the 28-year-old has never finished better than T42 in six previous starts, he’s playing well right now and should contend this week.

After the tournament is over, the top 10 in 2010 earnings will earn a berth in the U.S. Open, the second major of the year, as will the top 50 from the Official World Golf Ranking.

That makes golf betting interesting, as some players will also try to go low to avoid qualifications for the British Open. Check out the odds and the pairings at BetPhoenix.com and back up your favorite players with a wager on each round.

J.B. Holmes enters the week 52nd in the OWGR, and is not yet eligible for the U.S. and British Opens. He failed to win at the Valero Texas Open last week after holding the 54-hole lead; a last round 76 on a grueling 36-hole Sunday had him finish T13. He’s ninth in birdies or better on par 4s and was T2 in GIR at the Valero Texas Open. I expect another good showing from Holmes.

Rickie Fowler has four top-10s in 13 starts this year, including two in his last three starts. The rookie is a first-timer at HP Byron Nelson, but he’s getting close to notch his first win on the PGA TOUR. At the halfway mark, Fowler is racing for Rookie of the Year and hoping to catch Rory McIlroy this week.

Heath Slocum leads in driving accuracy and sits 12 in greens in regulation, a perfect combination for this 70-par golf course. His T4 finish at THE PLAYERS shows he’s in great form.

Charley Hoffman is finding his game back now that his wrist is feeling better. He’s got three top-5s in four starts at TPC Four seasons, and is improving every week.

Big-hitter Dustin Johnson is always one of my favorite young guns. He hasn’t done well since his win at Riviera, but he’ll be back on top anytime soon.

Ben Crane makes his first appearance since his T4 at TPC Sawgrass. He lives in the Metroplex and will have many supporters at TPC Four Seasons.

The former U.S. Amateur champion Rickie Barnes is having the best year of his career with four top-10s, including two in his last four starts, and he’s fourth on TOUR in total birdies. I expect him to win this year, why not this week?
