The New York Rangers Play Hopes Are on the Line against the Philadelphia Flyers
The New York Rangers Play Hopes Are on the Line against the Philadelphia FlyersThe end of the regular season is not the best time to go into a tailspin, yet that is exactly what happened to the New York Rangers. It could get even worse when they take on the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Rangers officially are in danger of blowing the playoff spot they have maintained all season. Yes, again.

The Blueshirts, who were eliminated from contention in their final regular-season game last year against Philadelphia, have slipped to eighth in the Eastern Conference after falling to 4-10-1 in their last 15 games with a 3-1 loss Thursday against Minnesota.

They were just two points ahead of No. 9 Buffalo entering Friday's visit to last-place Ottawa despite playing three more games than the Sabres. Surging Toronto was just three points back with one game in hand. Now history could repeat itself.

The Flyers may be vulnerable for this game. The Flyers have blown third-period leads in two of their last three games and have been outscored 11-3 (minus empty-net goals) in their last six.

The Flyers' power play has gone 0-for-13 in the past four games and 1-for-23 in the past seven games. They are getting good movement on the man advantage but have had trouble getting the puck to the net for rebounds.

Last week, it was Flyers captain Mike Richards who was hit hard by the flu, missing a game for the first time all season. Thursday night it was forwards Jeff Carter, Darroll Powe and Dan Carcillo who couldn't pull themselves out of bed to face the Maple Leafs. Carter and Powe each missed their first game of the season. Carter reported his illness early enough on Thursday for the Flyers to recall center Ben Holmstrom from the AHL Phantoms.

The Flyers are sick and playing horrible hockey, so look for the Rangers to get a much need victory.
