NHL West Powerhouses Battle as Canucks Visit Red Wings
The New York Rangers Seek Home Ice Advantage Over the Montreal CanadiensThe Vancouver Canucks are in ‘cruise control’ atop the NHL Western Conference. They lead the second place Detroit Red Wings by 9 points and long ago clinched the Northwest Division title. Entering this week, the Canucks held a whopping 19 point advantage over second place Calgary in their division. They’ve also got the NHL’s best overall record. At a point in the season where many teams in their situation would be looking ahead to the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Canucks are still winning games—they’ve won 8 of their last 10 and will prove a formidable challenge to the Detroit Red Wings when the teams go to battle on Wednesday night at Joe Louis Arena in the ‘Motor City’.

As if the Canucks’ winning percentage wasn’t enough evidence, they’re statistically the best team in the NHL. They have the league’s best scoring offense, averaging 3.21 goals per game. They also have the #1 ranked scoring defense in the NHL, allowing only 2.29 goals per game. The math is pretty simple—when you score more goals per game than any other team in the sport as well as allow fewer goals than anyone you’re going to win a lot of hockey games. We’ve been waiting for Vancouver to ‘dial it down’ a bit to set up a playoff run for awhile now but it just hasn’t happened and we’re starting to think they’ve made it a priority to not ‘look ahead’ to the postseason.

Detroit doesn’t have it quite so easy. The Wings are among the NHL’s top three scoring offenses (3.18 goals per game) but are only a middle-of-the-pack scoring defense. As you’d expect, that has resulted in a somewhat erratic performance. Entering Monday’s game against Pittsburgh, Detroit had a 6-7 record in their last thirteen games. They followed up a four game losing streak early in the month with a four game winning streak, but are coming off a loss to Nashville on Saturday. They’ve done well in games where they can dictate tempo and leverage their potent offense, but not so well against strong defensive teams. Even their usually dominant home ice advantage at Joe Louis Arena hasn’t been as strong this year—they’re 19-15 on home ice for a net loss of -9.2 units.

In theory, this should be a good matchup for the Red Wings but Vancouver isn’t your ‘garden variety’ high scoring team. They’ve got the unique ability to play a wide open brand of hockey on offense and not give up much on defense thanks to the ‘margin of error’ provided by the exceptional goaltending of Roberto Luongo. You can make the case that this game means more to Detroit, but they’ve got a 8 point lead in the division which means their playoff seeding is in good shape as well. Given the current form of a Canucks team that’s clicking on all cylinders at this point it’s hard to make a case for not taking Vancouver to beat the Red Wings here.
