The Buffalo Sabres Cling to the Eighth Seed Against the Montreal Canadiens
The Buffalo Sabres Cling to the Eighth Seed Against the Montreal CanadiensThe Buffalo Sabres take on the Montreal Canadiens in a game that is very pivotal to the playoff races in the NHL. These teams are fighting to improve their position as the regular season is winding down.

The Canadiens are setting themselves up for a showdown with the Boston Bruins for first place in the Northeast Division and the home-ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs.

Montreal's victory over the Minnesota Wild Sunday moved the Canadiens one point behind the Bruins. Boston has an additional edge because it has played two fewer games but Montreal can improve its position with a win in Boston Thursday night.

Montreal has the Bruins' number this year. They have won four of the five previous meetings but it is the one loss, an 8-6 decision on Feb. 9 in Boston that could have the Canadiens concerned.

The Bruins dominated the Canadiens with their physical strength in a game which produced more than 180 minutes in penalties. But Montreal coach Jacques Martin didn't agree with the assessment that the Bruins intimidated the Canadiens. He notes that the Canadiens won the next meeting in Montreal by a comfortable 4-1 margin. He also said the loss in Boston was due to defensive breakdowns. He pointed out the Bruins' aggressive play hurt them because they were shorthanded eight times and the Canadiens scored four power-play goals.

The last meeting between the two teams produced controversy when Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara ran Max Pacioretty into a stanchion and the Montreal player suffered a concussion and a cracked vertebra. Chara received a major penalty and a game misconduct but there was outrage in Montreal when the NHL decided not to suspend Chara.

As they prepare for that game against the Bruins, Montreal will get beat by Buffalo, who will be more focused.

The Canadiens are 3-7 in their last 10 after allowing 2 goals or less in their previous game and the Sabres is 4-1 in their last 5 when their opponent scores 5 goals or more in their previous game. The Buffalo Sabres take down a distracted Montreal team, and hold on to the eighth spot in the NHL standings.
