The Boston Bruins Battle the New York Rangers in an East Coast Brawl
The Boston Bruins Battle the New York Rangers in an East Coast BrawlTwo teams in the NHL meet in what should be a great game, as the Boston Bruins and the New York Rangers are playing great hockey. The Bruins may have some letdown when they face the Rangers, since they are coming off a huge win.

The Bruins didn't clinch anything with Thursday night's rout of the Canadiens in Boston. It's still too soon for that. But when you look at the many meanings the game had for Boston, it was a very significant win.

First of all, it gave the Bruins a five-point lead over the Canadiens for the Northeast Division lead and the third seed in the Eastern Conference playoff picture, and Boston still has two games in hand.

The win also moved the Bruins within four points of the second-place Capitals, and Boston, which plays host to the Rangers on Saturday, has a game in hand on Washington.

But perhaps even more important, the Habs came to Boston 4-1 in the season series with the Bruins, who were 2-6-3 over the last two seasons against their biggest rival. There was the hubbub over the Zdeno Chara hit, the comments made back and forth, the anticipated ugliness, and all the Bruins did was go out and beat up on Montreal.

The Canadiens, of course, could be the Bruins' first-round opponent. The Rangers could also be the Round 1 opposition, with what happens Saturday part of that picture, too. Regardless of all that, the Bruins proved something to a lot of people, probably even themselves, with Thursday's win.

The Rangers are 4-1 in their last five against a team with a winning record and they catch a Bruins team in a letdown spot.
