The Montreal Canadiens have had a difficult time going up against the Toronto Maple Leafs. With their playoff opponent almost certain, it will be interesting to see if Montreal will show up for this game.

Toronto will try to sweep the Canadiens at home this year, if it can pull out a win Saturday in the final match of the year. The Leafs are 2-0 against their old rivals at the ACC this season, outscoring them 6-3.It appears that the Canadiens are willing to take their chances against the Boston Bruins in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Montreal maintained its hold on sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Ottawa Senators Thursday night. The loss in overtime means the Canadiens can't finish lower than seventh and they are assured of a sixth-place finish with a win in the final regular-season game Saturday in Toronto. They also finish sixth if Buffalo doesn't win both of its final two games.

A sixth-place finish would likely send Montreal against Boston, and the Canadiens would prefer to face the Bruins rather than Washington or Philadelphia. The Canadiens held a 4-2 season edge over Boston and aren't concerned that they lost their last two games in Boston by scores of 8-6 and 7-0.

Coach Jacques Martin feels that the Canadiens have been playing playoff hockey over the final week of the season although they came up short of that standard in Ottawa. But Martin might have contributed to that effort. Martin rested a few players in Ottawa, including No. 1 goaltender Carey Price.

The Maple Leafs are 8-3 in their last 11 games playing on 2 days rest and they will easily defeat the resting Canadiens.
