Lookin At Lucky To Miss Travers With Minor Illness

Lookin At Lucky To Miss Travers With Minor IllnessFollowing a dominant victory in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth this past weekend every expectation was that he’d next run at the Travers Stakes in late August. Although trainer Bob Baffert at the time said that hadn’t been decided, the August 28 race at Saratoga was the obvious choice. Early this week, however, Lookin At Lucky’s team received some bad news—he’d come down with a minor illness and wouldn’t be able to recover in time for the late August date.

Although Lookin At Lucky’s owners were leaning against a run in the Travers before the illness, this made the decision for them. The horse was scheduled to ship to his home track at Del Mar this week, but on Tuesday was discovered to have an elevated fever. The fever—a result of a minor illness—has been contained but an aggressive treatment with penicillin means that Lucky will be out of action for at least a month during which time he’ll remain at Saratoga according to Bob Baffert:

“He’s going to be there for a while. We had to give him penicillin. So he can't run for at least 30 days.”

Baffert said that it could have been worse had they gone ahead with the transport to Del Mar:

“Thank God I didn't ship him up here right away, or he would have headed right back out to (the veterinary clinic at) New Bolton”.

With the Travers off the table, the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 25 at Philadelphia Park becomes the most likely next race for Lookin At Lucky. That’ll put him on schedule to race in the Breeder’s Cup at Churchill Downs in early November. He was last year’s champion two year old and has staked a claim as the best three year old in horse racing with consecutive wins in the Preakness and the Haskell.

In the Haskell Invitational, he went off as the post time favorite and completed 1 1/8 miles on a fast main track in 1:49.83. Lookin At Lucky paid 4.40, 3.00 and 2.40 with the win. Trappe Shot paid 3.40 and 2.60 to place and First Due was 3.00 to show. The 1-8 exacta paid $17.20.
