2011 Belmont Stakes

The 2011 Belmont Stakes gets underway this weekend and it will be the third installment of horse racing’s Triple Crown. With two separate winners in the Preakness and the Kentucky derby, there will not be a Triple Crown winner this year, but there will still be plenty of interesting things to watch in this race.

Here are a look at the horses that will be on the field and the ones that have a chance to win.

The Favorites

Nehro 7-2

Nehro will look to mirror the run at the Derby but finish with a win. Despite the fact that he only has a maiden win to his credit, he has proved to be one of the elite horses of this crop. The Horse ran a very good Derby despite being much closer to the pace than anticipated. The five week break should do him a lot of good, and if he can handle the distance, is a big threat to get his first stakes win

Animal Kingdom 2-1

The winner of the Kentucky Derby, this has been the best horse in the first two legs of the Triple Crown. With oodles of distance breeding on his female side, he only needs to keep his good form for trainer Graham Motion to be the one to beat and complete an outstanding 1-2-1 classic series. Look for another battle between Animal Kingdom and Shackleford in this race.

They Got A Chance:

Master of Hounds 6-1

The choice of many a wise guy, this Euro invader offers a lot to like. He has the advantage of being fresher than most, the benefit of stamina building European style of training, and a dam side breeding full of distance. Any improvement off a Derby that was even better than it looks on paper may win the Belmont.

Shackelford 6-1

Winner of the Preakness has a shot to win again at the Belmont. In his last three starts, he has proven to be one tough son of a gun as the field turns for home. The Preakness champ may be tough to run down once again if the pace is slow, but this race is too long to pick him as a winner.

Long Shot

Brilliant Speed 20-1

After getting up late to win the Blue Grass, he came back to run a solid race in Louisville. If he did well on the dirt at Churchill Downs, it stands to reason he may do well on the dirt again in New York. Being a son of Dynaformer certainly does not hurt his chances to get the distance.

This race may not have the Triple Crown on the line, but it certainly has plenty of reasons to tune in and watch another exciting battle.
