Kevin Harvick Wins Nascar Race At Michigan
Kevin Harvick Wins Nascar Race At MichiganKevin Harvick has had a lot of success on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit, but that hadn’t been the case at Michigan International Speedway. He’d never won at Michigan until Sunday when a fortuitous late race pit call allowed Harvick to take the checkered flag in the CARFAX 400. It was Harvick’s 20th career start at Michigan with a previous best finish of 2nd in 2003 and 6 top tens. The victory also clinched a berth in NASCAR’s championship ‘chase’ for Harvick #29 Pennzoil/Shell racing team.

Harvick’s gave a nice windfall to NASCAR betting enthusiasts, paying +1200 as the 6th choice in the betting odds. Prerace favorite Jimmie Johnson was a +450 chalk and finished 12th. Second choice Hamlin (+600) took second place. Polesitter Kasey Kahne was a +1500 choice and finished 14th.

It’s not that Harvick had raced poorly at Michigan in the past, but he just hadn’t gotten the breaks necessary to get a win. His crew chief Gil Martin gave him that shot on Sunday when he decided to stay out on the track during a late race caution. After the restart, Harvick ran down leader Denny Hamlin with ten laps remaining and held on for the victory. After the race Harvick credited his crew chief’s call as the reason for the win:

“That was a big decision to stay out but we had such a fast car today. This year has proven we can compete nearly every week when we show up at the track. I can’t say enough about Richard (Childress) and what he does to help turn this team around and I’m hoping we can just keep this up as we head into the Chase.”

Harvick started 8th on Sunday his win once again demonstrates the importance of a good start position at Michigan. In 83 Sprint Cup races at the track, the winner has come from the 25th starting position or better in 79 of those races. 53 of the 83 winners have started in the top five and 65 in the top ten.

Denny Hamlin finished second, with Carl Edwards taking the third place spot. Edwards was pleased with his effort and dedicated the run to owner Jack Roush who was back at the track for the first time after missing several races due to injuries suffered in a plane crash:

“We had the fastest car at the end; we just didn’t have enough time. Our Fords ran really well, we had three in the top five and it is glad to have Jack back here at the race track. I wish we could have got a win for him.”

Three races remain before the start of the ‘Chase for the Cup’ championship competition held in the final ten events of the year. NASCAR will race next Saturday night at Tennessee’s Bristol Motor Speedway before moving on to Atlanta and Richmond.
