No, it is the sunflowers dotting French countryside in July that captivates the imagination, the high Alpine and Pyrenean passes that separate the contenders from the pretenders.

The latest blow to hit the cycling world came earlier this week when reports revealed that Tour de France champion Alberto Contador tested positive for a banned substance during this year’s race. On Thursday, Contador answered these allegations with an explanation that is unique, if nothing else—he blamed the positive test result on ‘tainted meat’ that he ate during the race. The sport’s anti-doping authority reportedly found a ‘very small concentration’ of the banned substance clenbuterol in Contador’s bloodstream.

The cobblestoned streets of Arenberg, France are a very picturesque setting for fans watching the 97th Tour de France but the riders in the race aren’t quite as fond of the jagged and uneven surface. In particular, Lance Armstrong could probably have done without the concession to aesthetics as he suffered a flat tire during the third stage of the race which dropped him from 5th in the overall standings to 18th.

Alberto Contador held off a hard charging Andy Sheck and took advantage of his rival’s unfortunate chain malfunction to win his third straight Tour De France. Contador’s margin of victory was 39 seconds and provided considerable drama to the 20th and final stage of the race. Denis Menchov of Russia was third overall. American cycling icon Lance Armstrong raced in his final Tour De France and finished in 23rd place over thirty minutes behind his longtime rival and teammate Contador.

The 97th running of the world’s most famous bicycle race, the Tour De France, got underway on Saturday and will continue for three weeks and 3,600 kilometers (2,200 miles). The 2010 course will wind through France and Belgium and include 20 stages with flat course racing, mountain stages and a couple of time trials. A winner is crowned for each stage, and the aggregate performance determines the overall leader and ultimate victor. The current leader of the race can be identified by the iconic yellow jersey he wears.

Lance Armstrong had hoped to close the gap on the leaders in the Tour de France as the race hit the notoriously brutal mountain stages. There was good reason for optimism, as Armstrong is considered one of the best mountain riders in the world. Unfortunately, some more setbacks including several crashes has left Armstrong resigned to the fact that he’s no longer got a realistic shot at winning in his final Tour de France.
