This year’s WSOP Main Event will be remembered for many different reasons, skill most likely not one of those reasons. Let’s face it, this year’s WSOP Main Event finale table was loaded with tons of questionable plays and huge suck outs.
For all the professional poker players out there who spent this year convincing people this is a game of skill and not luck, there’s always next year! I do support the notion that poker is a game of skill, but I’m also familiar with the fact that a tournament with a field of 6400 entrants is going to force those skilled players to either dodge bullets or enjoy the walk back to the car.
When ESPN aired the finale table it aired some questionably interesting hands and gave little air to some of the biggest pots of the night. After commercial break, ESPN decided to jump into a AA vs. KK hand without any knowledge of how those chips ended up in the middle of the table. Kevin Shaffel and Eric Buchman were the two with all their chips in and Kevin held the aces. The blinds were at 200k-400k with a 50k ante. Kevin Shaffel made a no brainer raise to 1.2m from the hijack. Begleiter Than called from the cutoff only to be met by a re raise from Buchman who made it 5.75m from the dealer button. Kevin Shaffel replied by going all in, pushing Begleiter out and Buchman to the toughest decision in his poker career. He then made the call only to find that his two kings were against two aces and in serious need of lady luck.
So to stay true of the WSOP finale table trend, lady luck decided to pay Mr. Buchman a visit and bless him with a king high flop. This left Kevin Shaffel drawing to two cards or he would be eliminated from the tournament. All he needed was a two outer to drop to secure a future at the table and a chance to still feel that championship bracelet around his wrist. But, this didn’t happen. A king fell on the turn securing Buchman’s victory in the hand and Kevin Shaffel left in shock. However, even though he took a horrendous beat, he walked away a millionaire and even smiled. What class! One minute you sitting with millions in chips and then you squeeze dream cards like aces, only to be two-outed and knocked from the tournament. What a crazy game of poker!
