The Flop Heard Around the World

The Flop Heard Around the World
Monday, 18 January 2010 19:28
The Flop Heard Around the WorldIt’s few and far between when I feel bad for a guy worth millions getting out flopped and missing out on a chance for millions more, but Phil Ivey is that exception. To Phil, it wasn’t about the money it was about sealing his place in poker history. He has 7 WSOP bracelets, 35 money finishes, 1 WPT title, 8 WPT finale tables, 11 WPT cashes, and 1 EPT finale table. Let’s not forget the best part; Phil Ivey is only 33 years old! This was the man that was supposed to win it all.
Although he did win 2 WSOP this year alone, this was supposed to be his year to win "The Big One"!

Although low on chips, Phil Ivey came into the finale table being a huge favorite to win. He played great poker, and although the general public may not understand some of his plays, let me assure you that he played extremely well. It took one man running hotter than the human torch to put an end everything the fans and Mr. Ivey himself wanted, Darvin Moon. Darvin is a recreational players dream and a professional’s worst nightmare. People like Darvin give the general public the impression that poker is all luck and create more work for the professional’s who argue poker as a game of skill. If it was a game of luck than why do the same people keep taking all the money?

After catching little action and littler cards throughout the finale table, Phil Ivey was put in a no-brainer situation with ten big blinds left. Phil squeezed Ace King and shoved his chips to the center of the table. When everyone folded and the action came around to Darvin Moon. Darvin also made a no brainer decision and called a small percentage of his stack away with Ace Queen and with a chance to knock out the biggest threat at the table. The crowd cheered as Phil was staring down a chance at doubling himself into contention, and being in a dominant situation to do so. Than the flop came…..and right in the window a queen! Wham! In a matter of seconds poker history would have to be put on hold and Phil was to take that dreaded walk back to his friends and family. The crowd first reacted in shock and disappointment; followed by loud cheers and praise for the one they call “the Tiger Woods of poker”. He played the tournament with style and class, and after being brutally knocked out, he left the same way.
