| Rafael Benitez Out At Liverpool, Headed To Inter Milan |
Benitez signed a five year contract extension with Liverpool in March 2009, but following a disappointing finish this season in which the team failed to qualify for Champions League play management decided a chance was necessary. After working out a suitable severance agreement, it was announced that Benitez would be leaving the club by mutual consent. Team chairman Martin Broughton offered this explanation: "Rafa will forever be part of Liverpool folklore after bringing home the Champions League following the epic final in Istanbul but after a disappointing season both parties felt a fresh start would be best for all concerned." A spokesman Benitez gave his response: “He’s very sad and very upset he has been there so long. I’m aware he’s been linked with other job but I cannot make declarations on his behalf.” The ‘link’ to the other job has quickly become a reality. On Tuesday, Inter Milan Team President Massimo Moratti told Italian media that a deal is in place and awaiting Benitez’s signature: "We've got an agreement, we finalised the last details that in any case weren't important. Tomorrow we will say when Rafa Benítez will be presented. All we need is a counter-signature. In any case I think Benítez is not in Italy and will arrive here for the presentation." Moratti threw a little drama into the mix on Wednesday morning, when he appeared to backtrack and suggested that the final word on a new coach would come from Inter club director Marco Branca: "Wait for the club to tell you something, I do not do that kind of work here. Wait for Marco Branca and the others to tell you when the time will be and when the new coach will be presented." Despite the public recalcitrance of Inter Milan to announce it prematurely, reports in both the Italian and British media suggest that Benitez has agreed to a 3 year deal that will pay him €4.5 million Euros per season. He’s expected to bring most of his coaching staff with him from Liverpool including Mauricio Pellegrino, fitness coach Paco de Miguel and goalkeeping specialist Xavi Valero. As part of the deal, Inter Milan has committed €80 million in a transfer budget, with likely targets being Liverpool’s Argentine midfielder Javier Mascherano and CSKA Moscow ‘s Alan Dzagoev

Liverpool parted company with team manager Rafael Benitez after six years at the helm of the English Premier League club. The decision was reportedly one of ‘mutual consent’, and it doesn’t look as if Benitez will be unemployed for long—he’s been tabbed as Jose Mourinho’s replacement at Inter Milan and is currently finalizing a deal with the Italian Serie A side. There’s been some drama, however, as the announcement of Benitez’s hiring has been scheduled and re-scheduled several times now as the two sides work toward mutually agreeable terms. The current indication is that a deal is in place and just awaiting Benitez’s signature.
