| World Cup Weekend |
The inauguration was brief and lacking spunk as well as the two games on the board, Mexico pressed all through the 90 minutes and scored two goals however one was scratch due to an outside call from the line referee, the final score was 1-1. Mexico took the initiative from the get go; they kept the home team on the defense for the best part of the game but the African team took advantage of a defense error and scored the first goal. The game itself was not really exciting – at least for the quality of squads that make it to this world event – at times it got monotonous but 10 minutes till the end, it started to pick up Mexico scored the draw. Now both teams have a point apiece south Africa will face Uruguay @ Tshwane/Pretoria Stadium on the 16th and Mexico will come face to face with the French @ Polokwane on the 17th. Speaking about Uruguay and France, that match was even worst; needless to say some folks in the stadium were taking naps so you can imagine the viewers at home. A disappointing Uruguay did not glow, the Pereiras were slow and imprecise and the team itself was totally offbeat. France does not have a great team but managed to impose their rhythm and football. One thing was evident, both teams are weak in the front but have a very tight defense. All four teams in group A have one point each; next two matches perhaps will shine a light on the perspectives if they don’t bore us to death. Saturday morning Korea Republic stump Greece 2-0, on an exhausting game for the Greek, the Koreans used their speed to dominate their opponent, fortunate for Greece their opposing team still need much work on the strike zone. Argentina faced Nigeria and as expected it was a very fast game, The Nigerians did a fantastic job on the defense specially stopping Messi from doing any harm, the kid could not catch a break and his frustration was evident. The African squad not only did a great defense, it also rocked the Argentinean defense. Second half was all Nigerian and fortunate for Argentina the Nigerian strikers were not so refined and précised. Final score was 1- 0 Argentina scored by Heinze and now Argentina will try to stump Korean Republic on the 17th and the Greek with match up against Nigeria on the same date. Saturday was a disappointing day for the English, and the millions o followers worldwide. There has been talk about England being one of the favorites to take home the Cup, but after Saturday’s performance that looks like a long shot. The Englanders at the stadium seemed to be very frustrated at their team’s performance, they expected or I should say, all of us expected a stump but all we got was and embarrassing debut by the 1964 cup winner. England started out well, with an early goal by Gerrard just 4 minutes into the first half, after that the game turned into a running marathon without much spunk. The US Team did most of the work but not well coordinated, Clint Dempsey tied it when Green fumbled his 25-yard shot that skipped off the ground twice, yet another mistake in a long line by English goalkeepers. Fabio Capello was not a happy camper and it was amazing how he kept his cool and not burst out in rage – at least in public view – however Beckham did not disguised his discontent, the look in his eyes made a great reference. England will face Argelia and USA will take on Slovenia on the 18th, hopefully England will do a better job on their next performance. Best game of all was Germany and Australia, great mobility and a fest of goals. The German crushing machine had no mercy on the Australians and pounded at will. First goal came at 8 minutes into the game by Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose did the same @ 26' Thomas Mueller @ 68' and finally CACAU made the final kill @ 70'. Australia did what they could to prevent eve more of a massacre but it is without a doubt that Australia will be saying goodbye to the world cup very soon. Ghana beats Serbia on another tight game by a penalty shot executed by Asamoah Gyan. The game itself was a sleeper and not worth the time in front of the tube. There was no creativity, no real mobility, and very few incursions. Hopefully the tempo will change in the up coming games; so far it has not been an exciting competition.
